In 1995, students Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball began working at GIMP, and a year later, on February 15, 1996, the first version 0.54 was released, with the interface based on "Motif" (a licensed application for programming graphical interfaces ), but they quickly created a free alternative called GTK. The two, after graduating from college in 1997, dropped out of the program, but a few volunteers recovered the codes and released version 1998 in June 1.0. GIMP 1.2 has improved the interface, the ability to use brushes and fix bugs in previous versions. GIMP 2.0 used for the first time the GTK2 + toolkit, the ability to edit texts and the support for the CMYK color space. Major changes took place in variants 2.2 to 2.4. and included improved support for RGB, HSV, CMYK color spaces, Pantone colors, shades of gray, new selection tools and a complete change of interface. With the release of version 2.6, the program's interface has also improved, the interaction between the program and the user being more efficient.
