What is an SSD and you can do compared to a normal Hard Disk - video tutorial

Hi friends, in this video tutorial we will talk about SSDs SSDs are some revolutionary and advanced storage devices, which will replace the old ladies while hard drives are built exclusively of NAND flash chips (as a as USB drives), no moving parts and therefore are resistant to shock and very fast.

SSD technology is at the beginning but the performance is far superior to that of a conventional HDD, SSD first access has a very small SSD that offers extremely low latency when reading and writing small files while the hard drive has serious problems when it comes to small files.

NAND flash chips used to build SSDs are two types, SLC (single level cell), there is one bit of information stored on a cell SSDs built with SLC flash are quite expensive and have smaller capacities , performances are very good, they are mostly used in the enterprise, to servers and professional workstations, where performance and durability are the most important, SLC flash is extremely durable, withstand several cycles of rewriting .

The second technology fososita build MLC flash chip (multi level cell) on these chips can store multiple bits of information in a cell, most often store two bits of information at a cell flashes MLC have worse performance but it has high capacity and low prices, SSDs built with MLC flash chips are the most common in stores and it is likely that you also buy an SSD everything that is based on MLC flashes .

SLC withstands 5.000.000 write cycles (100.000 per cell) and MLC only 1.000.000-2.000.000 write cycles (10.000 per cell), more on Romanian, an SLC-based SSD has a much longer life than an MLC-based SSD, of course, first of all you have to afford an SLC, if you can't afford it you can go for the MLC flash, the specialists work more focused to improve the MLC flash.

In this video tutorial are presented the technologies underlying the SSDs, these technologies are: Wear Leveling Technology, Error Detection - Correction, Bad Block Management, SMART Technology, NCQ Technology, TRIM etc, TRIM is the newest and most important technology, it will help in time to maintain the performance of the SSD and to reduce the error rate faced by the controller, for now only windows 7 has this function included, in principle it is about better cooperation between the operating system and the controller When the SSD deletes a file, the operating system immediately notifies the controller that a file has been deleted and it will know what to do, without wasting unnecessary resources, it will go to safety.

The tutorial also presents some SSD models that have a very good value for money, of course these models are recommended during this period, after a while things will change, these models are indicative, our advice would be to consult the specifications of on the manufacturer's website before purchasing an SSD.
For details on the life of an SSD can read the following article:
What is the lifespan of an SSD?
Also in the article you will understand a picture, how things Wear Leveling technology, which is introduced in the new generation of SSDs.

Do yourself a reckoning, see how out cheaper, they also see that the performance of 500 performing gigs and what is the terra 1 for performance you have to go on the manufacturer's website.

  3. Sall. I also have a question 😀 you could do a tutorial on how to make a style sheet for a site. I think it would be great tutorial. Anyway I think you will not be able to do this in one tutorial. should be more…. Spersa you can do 🙂

SSDs will run on Linux, but I do not know if introduced Linux support TRIM technology, even though there are sure this time will be introduced very soon, the fact is that when you go to buy an SSD, you should inquire if TRIM support, it's a shame not to buy an SSD with TRIM, so you can receive a bonus of durability and stability.

Linuxistii have time to take advantage of these technologies outside of Cristi currently do not know anyone to have an SSD in Romania, are very expensive and not affordable to every pocket, you will probably be widely used and will turn their attention Linuxistii to these other SSDs currently prevails now.

  8. Beautiful presentation.

I do not agree with SSD storage at this time a suitable SSD only system possibly can partition for a dual boot.
      The recipe is as follows:

      SSD operating system.
      HDD for storing files.

Hard drive will not disappear anytime soon, will remain an unbeatable storage solution, the price / gig hard drive is favorable classic and I think it will stay that way long.

Please take your time and think about your question well before you ask it, as we have the patience to answer you like this and you have patience and formulate as correctly as possible what you want to ask, so if you want to receive an answer to the question. On one PC you can put as many hard drives (please, come on, you can put as many hard drives as you have SATA or IDE slots on your motherboard) you want not just one! Cristi uses the SSD as a C partition where he has windows and software installed and uses the other hard drives for storage… in conclusion what did you mean by “how is it possible?

  14. Very good presentation Cristi! SSDs over hard drives are much more efficient and more effective but more expensive unfortunately! Very good presentation failed it because I want to buy an SSD next week, now that I understood much of what's up with them you know what I buy! Thank you so much for what you do videotutorial.ro team! Hats off!

With video files it is a big problem, almost all hosting providers limit the bandwidth for vhosts, which is why "streaming" (actually progressive download) does not work properly.
For video pretty much have to pay the hosting or get along with them, or rent a VPS server virtual privet, not to mention dedicated server.
Video online = more money on hosting.
Not to mention that after a few months a provider come to tell you that eating too much and you have to tape wealthiest fee of course.
You're better movies on youtube, that if you do not put too much money.

    what's with hot swap

    • mastercrool: What's with hot swap

Hot Swap is common among servers allow changing a hard disk or other kind of device while the computer works, without having to stop work in any way.
This function must be supported by the motherboard or RAID controller for Hot Swap must be configured on a Tuesday raid, you can not do if you have one hot swap hard drive system generally can be hot swap When we set up a raid or a raid 5 6, in that case you can replace your hard drive while the system works ruin.
These things are useful in Mission Critical environments more in Romanian where continuous fire (such as videotutorial.ro) on a desktop not justify investment in such equipment should be specified as a controller that knows hot swap and Raid 5 hardware can be up to few hundred euros, and sometimes can cost 1500 euros if all options is a controller (battery, RAM upgrade, motificare mail).
Maybe I'll do a tutorial and about stuff like that, although for many it will be a little boring.

Let me answer in Cristi's place and tell you that all those who contribute to this site and to make tutorials do it out of passion and pleasure, when you really like what you do you can't go wrong or be small, and if you are small, it is nothing, you will grow if you continue to learn to read, study and research. If we didn't like what we were doing, nothing would come out and people would feel it, we wouldn't like them would we? The most important thing in life is to do what you like and if you like what you do then everything will be as you want. You don't have to be like others, you don't have to have the "crooked" standards of others, you don't have to follow the laws of the world, you don't have to be like others 5000000 YOU HAVE TO BE THE WAY YOU WANT AND DO WHAT YOU WANT! !!

You heard very badly I assure you of this, if you looked until the end of the tutorial you would have heard that it was said of the flashes (memories) used by SSD that they are NAND (non volatile ie it keeps the data on it even if they are not powered). ) unlike normal RAMs that need power to maintain data. Would you think that someone is struggling so much with an SSD and it would cost so much if they lost their data when the power is taken? =)))) You didn't even have the good sense to watch the tutorial until the end but you allowed yourself to comment like that… so that your comment is here… At minute 3 and 20 seconds it was said about NAND. Read before you say an aberration.

  26. Now hear first SSD. Congratulations tutorial.

  27. SSDs minuses of EEE pc does not only keep that reduced capacity and the limited number of writings. And reliability of SSD decreases as capacity is smaller.
To explain why. If EEE-PC, we have a 4 GB SSD and install XP on it in about 4 2GB they will be busy with XP and applications required. Now - there wearing level technology that divides data written several sectors ... but only in areas that are free (2GB). It follows that life is halved compared to calculations done 4GB.
And the problem becomes more serious in free space is less than the SSD. At 100MB free, I think the hard drive do not last more than 2 months with all level-wearing.
And who thinks of writing 100.000 mean much, think that XP is several tens of writing when you open a web page (images, html page, js swf sites cachuite s) when writing a document and you wont like me to give 20 CTRL-S in 20s more do some writing on the disc ... and the examples may continue.
In conclusion I think that SSD's are not worth it, not only because they have lower capacity and higher price, but not yet mature enough, and you are restricted to operating systems that does not save temporary data on the hard drive if you want to be sure you do not hurt over 6 months. When you reach the limit of writings-2 3 million then and I can say it's worth more than a classic hard drive

I want to go with a supplement on EEEPC SSD does not look like a normal SSD, this is a PCB flashes, controller and all he needs that comes inserted into a slot, like a plate wireless network.

Recently introduced technologies can extend the life of an SSD pretty much have done some calculations and normal use of a SSD on a desktop, an SSD stand around 100 years.
Do not know where you came 2 months of life with an SSD, I have a SSD 4 months now, my PC goes non stop and nothing happened.
Perhaps you have read an article earlier about flash chips which are used in some USB drives.
SSDs are already used in the enterprise with good results so far nothing happened.
Even if a cell becomes damaged, it will be izilata by controller without the user realizing.
Flash technology has evolved a lot and do not think can provide a regular hard drive safe level higher than an SSD, the hard drive normally breaks down if something else fails on SSD if a cell becomes damaged, it will be isolated, it will be as if there were.
No attorney SSD, but your approach does not support the reality of today, if we had this conversation years ago 2 3-certainly gave you right now things are different.
Indeed, if you put an operating system on a USB stick, it should not last more than a month, but remember, we are not talking of any any flash chip, mention SSDs are the most advanced components and which were launched lately.
If I crack my SSD that keep a system to tell you, until then, let's have no nonsense words.

A blog to publish a table clearly demonstrates that not even Stu things like that, SSDs are not so sensitive chia.
The study on which to publish is made by the company Imation, a knowl Furnis storage solutions.
I will give you a little preview:
The life of an SSD is about 236 32 years of writing gigs a day all the way segvential 32 writing gigs, the SSD will have a lifetime 40 years writing how amastecat (mixed ) (small files, large deletions, etc.).
Now I have to think about every write to disk if 32 gigs, I think an average user writes less 32 gigs per day.
In this reckoning come and deletions.
More details will make the blog.

You put them all on that router and put them in the same WORKGROUP, let's say you make a new workgroup, for example "SHARE".
In principle you should follow the steps, you created a network, that network you can share among you forget what you want, if not uiesti shares will not have access to anything.
I do not advise doing this unless you trust those partners with whom you exchange files.
That is if your router has a switch with auto crossover in principle should have.
I think I'll make a tutorial and on this subject.

You can't compare septaru (BMW 7 series) with matizu (Daewoo Matiz), plasma with black and white or even stupid with smart, even if sometimes confusion is created "smart is that with money" or more recently with "pounds" , now it is no longer "cool" to say "para" or "ieuro", now it is called "pounds".
SSD is something else, is another technology, the PC (personal computer) when it was invented probably cost as a neighborhood block, during production increased, technology has advanced and components or reduced and eventually got cheaper .
The SSD is not necessarily storage capacity, more interesting is the performance, I remember a few years ago I bought a USB stick, have a capacity of 256 MB, the maximum capacity was to be found in the market and new It seemed a very slick, you realize 256 MB, time passed and now a usb stick 16 Giga is almost trivial.
That will happen with SSD, with the passage of time, the storage capacity will increase.
In the end, please address yourself in a different way, with "ma nene" you can talk where you want or you can give me an email to talk to me as much by email as you want, unfortunately the visitors who come on we are not obliged to digest this senseless language.

Mmmm… so if I were to say now that in about 10 years the mechanical hard drives we have now will be replaced by SSDs would I be lying? Very nice article and very informative. The last hard drive I bought for my computer was a 640GB Western Digital Green AAKS, about 2 years ago and I gave around 300 RON at the time. I still have it and it's healthy. I can't wait for SSDs over 100 GB at prices… more for Romanians like that… even the current prices seem reasonable to me considering the fact that it is still a “new technology”, but the price is not proportional to the salaries here. I know that this is a tutorial site (like d'uh… the domain name says it all: D), but as a curiosity it would be interesting a test on how such a hard drive would behave in games taking into account the reading time / short writing… scratch that… not everyone thinks about games like I do: P.
In connection with the SMART technology (Self-Monitoring, Analysis & Reporting Technology) existing on today's HDDs. I understand that when the SMART leaves you UL that the hard drive is dying and that the manufacturer usually provides a kind of monitoring software, in my case, Western Digital offers "Western Digital Data Life Guard Diagnostics" for free on their site… not the other, but I said it is worth mentioning considering that you talked about technologies at the beginning, and what you said at the end when you highlighted the fact that you should always look for the product on the manufacturer's site before to buy it from a retailer / reseller / etc, the big truth is you said… I always do this… and all Romanians should do the same… so you avoid many, many inconveniences…
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  49. Bravo Cristi very hard tutorial, but I want to argue that that 40 GB Kingston SSD that say it is a shame SSD is surprising in all vedere.De what? For me reading transfer rate is more important than the writing that will not stand to play with inside fisierelor. In transfer is X25-M Intel SSD 80GB with only half faces a quite interesting prezente.Este SSD cost around 400 RON.Din Because PCBs are present only on the many faces 5 8 GB controller works just 5 active channels (in the 10 activated X25-M 80GB / 160Gb) what reflects halving writing speed (from 80MB / s as Intel's SSD-M Generation 25 X2 at 40MB / s). But anyway as I said earlier transfer rate is more important than reading the write-in If an SSD is meu.Oricum receiving newest platform tehnologic.Vestea really interesting is that this SSD supports TRIM.Inca something for those who buy an SSD should work in BIOS mode AHCI.Cristi, had to AS SSD Benchmark test run (it's free) software is designed for testing SSDs specilise especially to assess their well-known problems: low rate in reading / writing small files (4k). Moreover, the results are closer to reality because it works well partitionat.De disk access time must measure the AS SSD Benchmark because it measures the accuracy of 3 decimals and because it masaoara if small files, ie most unfavorable condition.

There will certainly not good for the spirit.
I'll come with a tutorial that'll talk about SSDs and in particular about the function TRIM in Windows 7 and how we realize that our technology has SSD or hard drive us.

I read what the other commentators wrote, some write what an ssd would do, but I don't know how many of them have something like that at home. as I said in another comment to another article "How long does an SSD have or how long does an SSD last compared to an HDD", I have 2 years of ssd and obviously I also have hdd for multimedia storage space is still very importantly, an ssd is distinguished by read / write performance / access speed, consumption, weight, lifespan, etc., what else do we need to know about ssd, I do not know how many of you know that the voltages in the PSU that are not stable and very well filtered and rectified can shorten the life of an ssd, jeopardizing its performance, a good system is built starting from the power supply which is actually one of the most imp pc components, so note use an ISO certified brand source… , 80 plus etc
SSD prices to acquire one is very friendly especially in Romania, nor outside (I'm in Germany, I live here) a SSD-250 600 700gb reach EUR price differences are not so great between brands producing ssd
vb now about techology, the more you buy a larger capacity SSD speeds it comes with read / write bigger and implicitly with the latest techology, I see the use of the 32 gb ssd only to keep him not to windowsu Pointing or what advantage I have as my quick starts and stops quickly Windu can not risk money only for this
SSD among desktop is starting out good deal is when you buy a SSD from 128gb up, but vb Christ is a matter of time
SSDs are expensive they do not have competition, but by hdd too soon we will miss him as our deposit base, I use 2 128 SSDs from Intel GB each, and 2 samnsung SJ 103tb hd1 each
PS As some commenters on this blog, the language used can be classified as a fiinu unuor shepherds lived in the mountains with friends sheep are, and strainatete Romans distinguished by their uncivilized behavior and garbage language used throughout Europe that we classify some retarded people up mentality will not change we will classify some of Europe Lichee 2 still decades from now.

Cristi- "What do I want to ask: do I need something extra to connect the SSD to my current hard drive?" - no need to connect your new drive with your current drive, I assume that in your new PC you have SATA 2, the case which you exposed to it is valid in the case of HDD on IDE (ATA 100) where the first hdd that is installed winowsu or boot sector must be put on the master and the second secondary put on the slave
When changing job sata did not need it, actually stick sata2 jack (jack data cable + foo) in ssd and then into a port on the pl sata2 basic and you're done
your new SSD preferred that to acquire windowsu to install on it, and the other that it was your drive (HDD) to hold him for multimedia.
And in connection with the other pc that you have no idea I understand, you can make some upgra sites in mem ram and operating sistemu'l if you want to run Vista on a PC or wind 7 4 Pentim gender or equivalent in a AMDK8 then you have trouble, my advice to stay with him sp3 windows xp.
PS: the acquisition SSD I hope you documented better listen and watch the tutorial help of Christ will give you much success.

  57. Thanks a lot for response george00
    - that's exactly what I want to do, to run win on SSD and keep the current one for multimedia, especially since I've heard something about this RAID, I've heard that it increases performance, and after seeing in CRISTI's tutorial how to move an SSD
    - I look forward to CRISTI's tutorials on SSD (and not only); anyway, I'm waiting a little longer with the purchase, because if I'm still going to give some money, at least I'll get something good.
    - The HDD I have now I think is on SATA2;
    - the phase is that I'm not very good at this thing with the compatibility between the components, with the slots, who with whom you vote, who for whom it is, etc.… .. and that's why I said that if I show the configuration to someone who knows, maybe, I give me some tips, what could I do / make them work better 🙂 because he is doing well even now, as I said
ica gave thanks for a response, I wish you a nice evening to all

cristi - as you mentioned about RAID, you can also find the answer on the video tutorial, if I'm not mistaken CRISTI from the video tutorial has an article about RAID arrays (go to the top right and type in the box search in the video tutorial and GO)
You have to inquire at your motherboard model if RAID support, and if bear the bear raids (raid 0, 1, 5, etc.)
Best raid raid is made between 0 2 HDD of the same capacity, but it is dangerous in terms of data loss.
In your case I do not think you have a need for a RAID array, you do not have 2 for identical HDD, and you decided to take your ssd (as I think you know is not ssd hdd) which has a speed access to the actualurile fpóarte small HDD and read write speeds are formidable than the old hdd, it is pointless to make a raid array
Matrix raid is made and used by users who want more perf from the media (in this case hdd), but in your case there is no point for you to SSD have a much higher speed as a raid array HDD.
But before buying SSD interested, read, ask for advice and later do not feel sorry, SSD e'ste not even f cheaper.
Mau advice, get an SSD with a capacity greater than 64gb of prefereat 128 up (I know it is more expensive but 32, 64 do not have what it fol, Windu and install both?)
forgotten figures f careful read / write to have a good report adik larger.
PS. May you please let commenturi change user name (username) for you and protagonist article (crystal) have identical names and not confuse them even Christ said in a comment from other users to fol another name or indicative after or before, like me, are named George, but I put 00, I hope you understand, a good day.

You read correctly, the SSD has an almost "non-existent" access time, they can store data wherever there is free space or it is marked as free, in conclusion they do not need defragmentation.
Defragmentation is ordering more efficient access to data if the hard drives (to read them effectively), SSD does not need it, they all work differently and have different rescheduling plus self-cleaning and recycling the space marked being free. 7 Windows automatically disables defrag for SSD drives, where the utility of Windows7.
Forced use defragmentation software for SSD cause unnecessary wear to the cells.

You probably asked a question without thinking or to appeal to logic (if you somehow and somewhere in there your gray matter)
With a car, you need to go faster, be faster? To move quickly and do as little time from one point to another. Right?
This weather and the horse, to think well but in a short time for us to move naturally in real time and we do not have to wait ten minutes until soft opening X and Y or until a copy film a few MB in a few hours due to hard disk nifty.

  75. Hello! I seriously considered purchasing this SSD (http://www.emag.ro/solid-state-drive-ssd-corsair-force-gt-2-5-60gb-sata-cssd-f60gbgt-bk/pd/EXRXDBBBM/) And having a notebook I use with this rack (http://www.emag.ro/rack-extern-hdd-vantec-nexstar-lite-nst-285s2-bk/pd/ES4ZMBBBM/).
It would be a problem if the ssd is sata 3 and rack sata, sata 2?

  76. Hello! I recently bought a laptop HDD and wants to put an SSD. The problem is that I have only sata sata 3 2. I would like to know the difference of speed between them and if they would feel the difference in boot, prog running, etc.

I think this picture is 1000 words (3G and 6G speed limits) if you understand: http://sarcomputer.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/sata2_vs_sata3.jpg%3Fw%3D600%26h%3D305%26h%3D305

Hello, tell me please if you know the reason, owning a Dell notebook and I recently replaced the HDD with an SSD, but I hear a Bar / Cara inside the laptop and not from cooler, often when we hear scrool using your mouse. I thought Cara HDD so, but now continue. Thank you.

    • Vali can tell you that that sound is not coming from inside the hard disk drive, exactly the same thing had happened to install an SSD on asus x54c the sound that is heard is in one of speakerele laptop because I'm not sure but I know you're trying to Documents on this, I think it's CVA because the supply voltage when the charger is connect your laptop to reduce this noise and it sounded much louder only when it was on battery

  81. MCD: Fb tutorial for boot and others esi a video on YouTube about that, but I'll take my 5 an SSD over years when it will be cheaper, are very expensive in space we offer a cost SSD 1 7000 tb euro Low reliability in extra time, some say as she lowers memory defective cells are locked, so you lose and space. but like everything in this world has advantages and disadvantages, advantages super performing read, write, access, lack of noise, Cara in pc, price and reliability disadvantages, but this is solved in the coming years while

I do not know where you saw the 1 euro 7000tb SSD, I saw 500gb with no 500 euro, we must not exaggerate if you do not like the prices (300-500ron for a small ssd for windows) then comment on any new shows is expensive at first, and you would need to know the novel well this thing

    • I suggest you look at the publication date of the article and see why it cost so much a few years ago but now can cost so much cheaper

  82. Hello… I would like to buy an ssd, but I don't know which one to choose

    Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC128N / AM 2.5 ″ 128GB SATA III MLC

Samsung 830 256GB Series SATA III SSD

    Kingston SSDNow S50 Series SS050S2 / 32G 2.5 ″ 32GB

    Kingston SSDNow V200 Series SV200S37A / 64G 2.5 ″ 64GB SATA III

what would be the choice..thank you…
I would say this Samsung 830 Series 256GB SATA III SSD but I'm not very good… I'm waiting for an opinion.

    • I had a 60 GB Corsair SSD, which broke down after two years. It cost 470 ron. Being under warranty, Emag gave me the right to choose another one. I put more than 250 ron and I chose Samsung 840 250 GB. Of course, before I read the reviews on foreign forums. And for this reason I chose it. As long as I am very happy with it. I made a benchmark with AS SSD on both Corsair and Samsung 840 .Because I can't illustrate {creenshot} here the score obtained on both SSDs, I can now say that at Corsair the overall score was 287 {Read-124, Write: 100}, but at Samsung 840, the overall score: 931 {Read: 4400, Write: 272}. And the "note" given by WEI is 7.9 on Windows 7 64 bit. I do not want to influence the choice you will make, but I thought that, comparing the results that others users will put them here, it will be easier for you to decide., I wish you were inspired when you choose the brand of ssd!

  84. Hello! I bought this type of SSD: Flash SSD Kingston V300 2.5 ″, 60GB, SATA 3; I want to install LInux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on it and I would like to know if I have to do something specific before installation, that is to format hdd or something else! Just add in the laptop and start the installation? What is the best SSD on Windows or Linux? or is there no difference? Thank you

  85. Scz hurrying spelling mistakes and I'm not good with tablet friendly!

  86. Thanks for the tutorial.
Because I am not satisfied with the "reaction" speed of the "cabinet" I had, I thought of putting an SSD in it. Based on the tutorial, I found out a bit about what to eat and why they are better than an HDD.
Now we are going to see what way to transfer system on a SSD (which of course is going to buy it).

    • Adrian Gudus said

It's very simple, there are software that can help you in this regard. Specifically, it clones the C partition and copies the clone to your SSD. We even have a tutorial on "how to clone a hard drive" although it is a hard drive, it is also valid for SSDs. You can find the tutorial with the search box on the top right

      • Thanks for the reply. Sorry we saw just now.
Eventually the PC received a Toshiba SSD that I could easily migrate due to a software recommended by these people.
Although the PC is a very old generation with a dual core Athlon, with mounting SSDului moves incomparably better.
As I was delighted change've got a SSD for laptop. When I went on laptop safer. We put in place SSDul hard drive and put it on a new system. Laptop hard drive I put in a rack and use it as external hard drive. It connects to any USB plug.
Now whatever happens to SSDul can ever bring back original HDDul and laptop should go smoothly.
