What is the video tutorial about Automatically backing up files to a mirror folder with RealTimeSync?

Today I present to you a second component of the FreeFileSync application, namely RealTimeSync. That is why I RECOMMEND you to watch it first FreeFileSync tutorial.

This software complements FreeFileSync for backup automation.

Specifically, it automatically copies files from the desired folder to a backup folder, to have a safe copy of the files.

Why automatically back up files?

If in the previous tutorial, with the main application FreeFileSync, I showed you how to do a backup job with FreeFileSync, which works within the parameters we chose, today I'll show you how to automate this backup job.

Backing up your files is important, because their state depends on the state of the storage medium. If the storage medium breaks, goodbye files. Of course, files can be recovered, but not completely and not without cost. So the healthiest thing is to keep important files on at least two different storage media.

How does RealTimeSync work?

RealTimeSync works very simply; It basically runs the backup job, which we created with FreeFileSync, every 10 seconds, or every 10 seconds, depending on how we choose to run it.

Once the job is loaded into RealTimeSync, we have the time option between runs, which by default is 10 seconds, after which we press the "Start" button and every 10 seconds it will copy the files from the source folder to the backup folder.

Automate RealTimeSync startup when the PC starts

After we have loaded the Job into RealTimeSync and chosen the time at which it should run, we must also save this job created in RealTimeSync.

This job can be saved on the desktop or any other location, and if we double-click it, it will start.

In order for RealTimeSync to start with Windows, and run automatically without us having to think about anything, the job must be placed in the programs folder that starts with Windows.

The startup programs folder is:

  • shell: startup if you configure the startup behavior for the current user
  • Note: the path corresponds %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
  • shell: common startup if you configure the startup behavior for all users using the device
  • Note: the path corresponds to:
  • %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
