How to reinstall GRUB 2 in case of a dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu, after reinstalling Windows - video tutorial

Hi friends, in today's tutorial you'll learn how to restore GRUB 2 if we use the Linux operating system Ubuntu or another Linux distribution that uses GRUB 2.
What is GRUB 2?
Granted 2 Unified Bootloader is the descendant of the first version of GRUB is the boot loader for Linux distributions. As Windows XP is NTLDR (NT Loader) and Windows 7 has BootMgr (Boot Manager) and just have a Linux boot loader called GRUB.
In which cases is to restore the GRUB?
When you have a dual boot (2 operating systems on the same PC) and for various reasons, the startup will not appear in the Boot Manager that you were able to choose which OS to boot). You've probably encountered situations where you had installed Windows XP, Vista or Ubuntu Linux 7 and on another partition, you formatted C and reinstalled the windows due to a virus and have noticed that on startup, although you have Ubuntu on a another partition, do not you wonder which OS you want to boot. That's because, when you reinstall Windows, it wiped out GRUB. As you know knows GRUB see Windows operating systems but no Windows boot loader knows to see Linux. So if you are thinking of a dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu or any Linux distribution, install Windows first and then install Ubuntu on another partition. A restore GRUB is necessary if you have made some updates to the system, an upgrade to a new kernel and after reboot, the operating system does not boot Ubuntu.
GRUB 2 is recommended to be installed on the primary hard drive (first hard drive - sda) if you want all installed operating systems to be available in a boot manager and at PC startup you can choose which operating system to enter . GRUB 2 can be installed on another hard drive (the second hard drive) but when you start the computer, if the hard drive on which you installed the GRUB is set in the BIOS as a secondary hard drive (Primary Slave or Secondary Slave) to have the boot manager from where you can choose the system to enter because when starting the PC, the search for an operating system is done on the first hard drive or the first partition (Primary Master). To access the operating system installed on the 2nd hard drive (assuming that GRUB 2 is also installed on the 2nd hard drive) you will need to put the 2nd hard drive in the BIOS as being the first (First Boot Device or 2 st Device) and so when starting the PC the boot will be done from hard drive 1 (I recommend watching Tutorial BIOS). In conclusion, whether you have a dual boot between a Windows and a Linux or Linux distributions between 2 PC startup and you can not enter the operating system or give you the opportunity to choose the operating system you want to sign is necessary restore GRUB. That being said I invite you along umrarim video tutorial. Useful information, thanks. I have a question (could also be a proposal for a future tutorial).
I would like to customize GRUB. If say, I have a hard already has Windows XP installed, and in addition, install and ubuntu, every time you restart your computer you will be asked which OS to choose. Nothing unusual up here. But I'd like to put the Windows XP operating system priority (do not want to be ubuntu). I mean every time you restart the computer, if I will not choose the keys to choose which operating system, he automatically loads Windows XP. Ubuntu want to use it occasionally.
Also 10 dialog seconds they choose which OS I want to upload it seems a little high. Probably 3-5 seconds should be more than enough.
    How could I do this?

The tutorial is welcome. I'm glad you did this and in this way I thank the video tutorial team for the time allotted to teach others the "secrets of the PC" and more. and when you have time, tar.gz files, as they should be "installed" using the terminal. Thank you because with your help I also buttoned linux and I have dual boot, I will easily want to get rid of windows and use it only in proportion of 10% compared to Ubuntu. Regards a constant visitor of this site, to be healthy and to as many tutorials as possible.

You can install from synaptic startupmanager and then you choose what you want to boot first!

  10. good tutorial. but i have a question about this GRUB. i have windoes 7 on my laptop and i installed ubuntu as the 2nd operating system. but i installed it on my own on the same partition with windows- ul, in addition I installed it with wubi.exe. Then, when I made updates for Ubuntu, the system asked me something about something GRUB but not knowing what it was about, I checked everything. And after I restarted the laptop … .I had to enter some command and other things I didn't know. I uninstalled everything and just reinstalled windows. Ubuntu scared me. In conclusion I want to mention that the tutorial is good, but it does not refer to how we proceed when ubuntu is installed with wubi.exe. I am waiting for an answer. thank you

If you have dual boot XP and 7 and you have to install XP, to restore the Boot Manager and have again the option to choose between the 2 operating systems, do what my colleague said in the tutorial with BOOTMGR. Click on the word BOOTMGR written in red in the text above the tutorial and you will reach the tutorial directly. Tell me if it was useful to you…

  16. you don't say anything about lilo. we want lilo too. asap. don't worry but I used the "search button" and the "black box" next to it.
    greetings.

  17. Hello.
    Very useful tutorial, I appreciate!
I also needed to restore the grub because I reinstalled windows XP proffesional SP3 that I use, BUT after I wrote in the terminal what I needed (I checked about 5 times if I'm doing well), besides the fact that it said he managed to install, he also told me the following thing: “This software may cause boot or other problems in the future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track. ”. I use Ubuntu 11.04, did you have a bug, or was it not compatible with my system, because I could not boot into windows or ubuntu and I had to reinstall windows again. I hope you don't have this problem.

  18. Very good tutorial, there's no way to not be useful.
Who installed Linux at some point encountered a problem all this, who is not, and will happen at some point too.
All that started with Linux, tried dual boot ptr first time with the original.
So it's inevitable that you hit the Grub.

  19. unfortunately in linux mint 11 “katia” does not work restored so the grub gives me the following error: grub-probe: error: cannot stat ʻaufs'.
/ Usr / sbin / grub-probe: error: can not find a device for mnt / boot / grub (is / dev mounted?).

  20. Very good tutorial and look how many tutorials on Linux!
I would be very happy if you make a tutorial on how to restore GRUB 5.5 a CentOS Linux server (server version without GUI).

I did a full backup of the entire hard disk TAR:

    cd /
    mkdir backup
    cd backup
    tar-cvpf / backup / fullbackup.tar-directory = /-exclude = proc-exclude = sys-exclude = dev / pts-exclude = backup.

Then, I extracted all the files on another hard (hard disk again), but we need to restore GRUB, otherwise Linux starts. It can make such a video tutorial?

Thanks and keep up the good work ...! Make a good work here ... Congratulations!

    If I'm not mistaken, CentOS command is: sudo grub2-mkconfig-o / boot / grub2 / grub.cfg

Lord Adrian, All Stanciu are and I want to apologize because I was not explicit.
I wanted to say that I want then when asked what system to boot there in grub option to have Windows 2 7 be the first that then begin to choose the default boot Win. 7.
      Thank you very much, Stanciu.

  25. I bought a desktop with linux fedora, I reformatted HDD and now I can not enter the boot menu nor del f2 nor probably have wiped out GRUB, please help, I tried the live cd, usb

  26. Congratulations tutorials.
In the above we have a misunderstanding. For dual boot, in case when we have an external hard drive and have it installed on ubuntu, grub 2 being installed on the primary hard disk (the one with windows), if you remove the external hdd does not boot into any operating system. Probably grub2 installation, it deletes mbr of windows.
Should when placing external hdd ubuntu to boot ubuntu, and if not insert external hdd when booting primary hdd (the one with windows in laptop).
In this case that hdd to put grub 2 ???
Thanks in advance to those who know the answer.
