How to install codecs on Ubuntu Linux for viewing movies - video tutorial

We present a tutorial passed that comes Totem Movie Player already installed on Ubuntu Linux and ready to work, but what do we do when we want to give play .avi video file and see that he refuses to play-eze ?? ?

Yes you guessed it, today we will talk about codecs !!! Many times when you want to play different video files and find that they don't work, you probably think about the cause. Well, the only reason is one: You don't have the necessary codecs to be able to play that video format. In some countries codecs or more precisely the use of codecs is forbidden! Why? For the simple fact that most codecs are patented and developed by various companies and to use them you have to pay. As Ubuntu is a very popular and widespread Linux distribution for everyone, in order to avoid possible conflicts with some countries where the use of codecs is prohibited without a license or without payment, it was decided that Ubuntu Linux should not come with codecs in the installation package but those who live in countries where the use of codecs is not forbidden to be able to install the codec packages very simply and easily. How? very simple, a "Repository" was made (warehouse where the files and sources of various applications, software, libraries are kept) where they are kept, and all the user has to do to have them, is to enter a command line in " Terminal "to" hit "the Enter key, enter the password, and wait for them to be added and downloaded.

Using these codecs and you can even watch the original encrypted DVDs (purchased or rented) without doing something special

But let's better to watch this video tutorial

Remember, if you have suggestions, complaints or additions do not hesitate to write in the comments box, de-also if you met the comments box a user has a problem and you can help him, do not hesitate to do it, the only way we can do this place better, see the comments box!

Enjoy !

"Galgara" (because you wrote so ... perhaps he was gargling) that are called explanations are necessary especially users who are new to Linux. I could simply say nothing and just look. That's why people do not know how to use a PC that does not entirely understand the operating system and its foundations. It's not only important to know how to do, you need to think less and logical that we are not robots to do exactly what it says another! People need to know what a codec, what it's for, how it takes, why not come installed on any system these codecs, what it means and what a "Repository"

If I showed and explained I would not have any of that you have learned mechanically, you have learned only how to do and what not to do so and not otherwise.

Maybe you are those best tutorials on YouTube where one is a tutorial on execrable resolution, it is seen pixelizat ... you put a rock song in the background open notepad and start writing text and you rub your eyes straining you to decipher what he writes with tiny fonts in the file text.

We have our standards and our principles, who wants tutorials and peri 2 fake title, to go on YouTube!

I was wrong with the "galgara" thanks for the warning. Not a great blogger or critic just what I said and I think I was misunderstood. What I mean is that there are a lot of downtime, rehearsals and stuff who do not have a place (not just in the tutorial). From what I see are a team of capable people, you can edit a little film (eg you could cut the time spent installing and stuttering next (to close to not close the window)) can peeking in http://www.lynda.com I think will be helpful.
        Thanks for your time.
        Good luck.

We are capable and we can do what is on Lynda.com but forget one aspect !!! Those tutorials cost !!! Don't want a lot for free? If we hadn't done tutorials at all, it would have been better. Ok we will do them like the ones on lynda.com but let's see how ready you are to take the money out of your pocket for them… what do you say?

Aaaa, you didn't want it for free, did you?

Why is it that people are so ignorant and so have high demands when talking about free? Do you have the impression that everything you deserve and someone has to be super professional to you for nothing?

We invite you to make your own tutorials, even stutter as ours so let's see how good you are in this, you're getting into?

Not directing any tutorial and do not want to do that! We are people just like you, we do not want to be a rigid television that reads from the teleprompter and if you take prompt no longer be able to present the news. Believe me that what we do is difficult as they do those of television! Not directing, not edit, everything is spontaneous, not stand to read the papers in front of them, we've got it in his head.

We SAFIM normal people closer to visitors by the simple fact of getting simple tutorials to flow naturally directed not.

Are long finca are detailed and important to know and you like Adrian, Cristi, Boby and all trying to do tutorials how shorter, but depends on the topic, ubuntu is new and it gives more detailed, lest you appear ugly to you or as you call it, and so you say it's ugly and not good (as you say). I do not use ubuntu finca not have a PC too powerful to getting down to test new operating systems and if I have a new PC ubuntu my bag !!! So do not get upset but you know that Adrian tried to do me how small and how important focus, the detali !!!

Adrian tried to make tutorials how smaller and more focused on how important detailed! If not give details of those who watch it say that it is good for nothing, to unite say see, and it's true, you have the experience and patience to do something right and learn something new, I do not use ubuntu finca do not have a very powerful PC and a PC if I eau Nuo my ubuntu bag, no offense but it's a riot to call it like what you said, a revolt that Adrian shows us and gives us walls in mouth all, we should respect him and not only him, all the team Videotutorial.ro, all due respect from me! Well, you should know that I don't play much either, there is a San Andreas less often when I don't know what to do and after I'm bored of San Andreas I uninstall it and put Conter, there are some small games that don't require too much like NSF Carbon or others that I did not have installed on my PC, but instead I put many programs at once such as: for written-nero and cdburnerxp, for music-vlc, winap, kmplayer, mplayer, for net-mozila, google chrome, opera, etc. so for one purpose I put more programs and I ask a lot and I got used to windows and these programs, and I don't change ubuntu permanently on this pc like …… .. although I reduced from the specified programs leaving only the essentials and if I had a new ubuntu pc I would put it in, and anyway I wouldn't put in another operating system like windows like linux I wouldn't put anything in, this summer I put about 11 operating systems and I got tired of the laptop, I specify that I have 1 GB ram, HDD 112 GB and is about 4 years old since it was bought, he still has a problem with the DVD-rwar, he no longer goes to read the CD only the DVD and more recently he doesn't even want to burn DVD- before and I used to make a lot of DVDs, I found a DVD so it didn't burn at all but it read the DVD and the CD, I said to put it like that but it doesn't come in and I couldn't leave it without a face, my laptop is Packard Bell and replacement DVD-r was a boy who had broken his motherboard and sold parts of it and that laptop was Acer and did not fit the face, now you giveI wonder how tired this laptop is !!!

  5. Now, after a few weeks of using ubunt, I am convinced that it does not rise to the heights of windows. It's as if nothing works on it… you have to struggle if you want to do something… eg install a software until you find the debian file on the net or most of the time you can't find it and download a tar.gz2 archive and you don't know what to do you have many other problems with it. From the point of view of stability and security, it is much more than windows, but the boys still have to work on it to make it more user-friendly, even if they say it is.
Better make tutorials on windows because I bet that a normal user would not quit Widows's, and he arranged with familiar programs for Linux that you struggle to fcai something.

Tell me and me, when you first put your hand on a computer, you know to do everything at once, I had not learned anything?
Well this is Linux, a new beginning, it's understandable that it's hard at first, until you teach moods, chitibusurile schemes then everything will be easy and simple!

On Windows I knew from the first "play" with the Registry or knew where to reach them, you know all the tricks and existing applications?

Nor windows is not easy as you say! If you want to do something and do not know what or how software is called what? Search Google right? So in Linux it !! You'll see how easy it is to those tar.gz2, we'll get to that part but I repeat

      LINUX WINDOWS IS NOT !!!

You must have patience and to like to read! When the time comes and controls us will make home and will filter or monitor traffic to avoid and stop downloading torrents see then what will you do? I tell you, you go back to Linux!

If you looked at the news you would see that checks are being made, many were fined for sitting on hubs and sharing movies, games, music. It is enough to enter a hub and risk running out of PC and receive a large fine! Why? Because the police have started to stay on the net, enter your share and get your ip, and without any warning you wake up with the police at the door with a search warrant on them. If I catch you without a license to the operating system, you confuse it even more! In France, user traffic is already filtered, and whoever downloads torrents is "halit", this method has been adopted in other countries and will be adopted in Romania as soon as possible. Linux is the future, believe me!

    • AlexAdrian, how did you manage to increase your window of Virtual Box installed with Ubuntu? One I can not! My little window and it remains at the lowest resolution!

After instlezi operating system in virtual box

Click above on Devices and choose Install Guest Additions ...
It will mount an ISO image on your desktop (if the system is Linux virtual box)
      Double click on it
In the window that opens double click on the file autorun.sh
In the window that appears click on Run in Terminal or Run in Terminal
Will ask Password (put your user password, the one that you log on Linux) and click OK
It will open a window and expect to install at some point will write in that window Pres Return to close this window ... (return key does Enter)
Dai restart and voila, now you can increase virtual window!

If as a virtual operating system of Windows, no matter which steps are the same, you start the virtual system, go up on Devices then on Install Guest Additions… and the ISO image will be mounted and that autorun will automatically appear as when you insert a CD in the unit, install with next next and finish.

For each system that we installed to get large virtual window that you must install Install Guest Additions ... even if you install say windows 2 2 sites or Linux distributions for each virtual machine by doing these steps if you want to increase virtual window system, making these steps will not always have to press the CTRL key to release the mouse!

They do not understand how many hours of study it takes to create a package of programs ..and be offered free. !!!… .Linux is an Open Source software, meaning you do it the way you want, not as required like Windows… !!

Reacted like a child, to know that I understand your frustration you're angry for not coming out, and I've been there, I said, I hated Linux blasphemies and I started to look I love to own, 6 days I have not booted into Windows (I have it in dual boot with Wubi)

Commercial operating systems like Mac and Windows have license to come mp3 codecs, yes even mp3 is licensed format!

Ubuntu forum have tried to ask for help, to see where you're wrong, you do not do well? I refuse to believe that even if you have an nVidia card on Linux razor gotta go you just do not go, most likely you took a wrong driver or wrong somewhere. Look I even have an ATI card on Linux which is dust, go to resolutions to be, I can use compiz, I can enjoy all the special effects. Although they say they do not go MP3 sites default to me they went without any codecs, I installed audacious and I could playa mp3 the second 2 sites.

Again, Linux is an operating system very different from Windows

LINUX IS NOT WINDOWS !!! You need patience to teach him to understand him, to find out his "schemes", "fit"… no system is perfect, not even Linux, but it is clearly superior to Windows. I forgot what an antivirus is, what it's like to be careful when browsing so as not to get infected with viruses, I forgot what a firewall or antivirus is (word comes). You don't need all this on Linux. I also gave you a search link on the forum and a link to the forum, are you "tired" and you even look for topics with your problem? Did you write looking there on the forum "nvidia driver installation" ?? or "nvidia driver problems" ?? or "nvidia video card configuration" ??

It is impossible not to find solution, but if you sit and cry in the comments so that you do not get that and you ailalta and repressed anger on Linux and nerves will not happen anything good, nor will fix your problem! I told you, go ubuntu.ro forum is in Romanian, search for, read, ask, have the mIRC channel where you can talk in real time with them and you can ask for help!

Adrian says "Linux is the future, trust me," and I disagree a little. What do you do with hard-core gamers? WINE will deal you think? Little hope. Here's a possible future open source OS for those who do not understand Linux and do not want to give up games: http://www.reactos.org . I say that this operating system will be a great success.
    only better.

Do not worry, that's the future of gaming on the net or online. The cam end games on CDs, because they suffer from piracy. They then if Linux will have a market share importatnt (now he has about 10%), I assure you that game producers will draw attention to the linux. What do you find the games is because Windows, a separate industry that will evolve separately. My guess is that the future will be more closely linked to the internet.

You're right, games are made for windows over windows finca is a widely used operating system speechless! and this is for windows, Linux is basic if it is now passing windows and linux games imdeiat finca games depend on the operating system's core (most used, popular)

Reading to search and investigate does not mean ruining your creation!

But not going to complain, to be hard to read to learn and explore, or you give up easily destroying yourself as a person not just creating.
What would have been had the failure of Microsoft when Vista came out not what they wanted and the world is not happy with him and to put all of Microsoft across the neck and hang himself to have failed with vista ? But they have not done that, learned from mistakes, have researched and did a lot better 7 windows.

Your problem is related to the Xorg configuration, I say open a new topic on the forum with your problem or search existing ones! no one will stand in your place to look, but I did not need you, not my problem but yours!

I had a trial schedule that I still need to install it again on your computer. I can not because there is a tab in system32 this program.
The question is how can I remove all traces step by step the program trial, so I can use it again. Or how to get into the system 32 to delete this file. Or is there a special program for deleting tabs in 32 system? You can help me. Thank you.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing, we don't have much to help you, we don't have a way to know all the applications how to install and where to "spread" their files, each software has its secret and its way of defense against piracy. Not every software can be fooled. For some trial software that can be reused trial, it is necessary to reinstall the operating system. One method for the future would be to back up after you have installed Windows, drivers, antivirus, then install that software, and when the trial of that software expires you restore the backup, and install the software again and so you have the trial again , without reinstalling the system. Restoring a backup takes about 7-10 minutes compared to 45 for a "fresh" installation of Windows. If you don't know what a back-up is and how to create one, write it up in the "search on videotutorial.ro…" box on the right: acronis true image or paragon give enter and you will find the tutorials (paragon is free and acronis is a commercial software)

About the Repository I also said in the tutorial what it is and that's how I formulated it, it is a repository for files, sources, software…

I want to help the community by doing these tutorials and show people that there are things more beautiful and free besides those made by Uncle Bill.

Since I saw tutorials made by you began to like. Learn not the criticism of those who kiss it's ass Bill Gates. I for one am tired of errors and viruses on Windows. 28. Adrian I say to continue the tutorials with linux, why do I say that? To know that there are many linux enthusiasts out there but who don't show up because I consider them to be people with heads and not 15-year-olds who eat "windoze" on the bread and they also comment just for the simple fact of being noticed, I think I'm a huge Ubuntu fan and I've been watching you with pleasure for more than half a year, so in conclusion I say that you continue the tutorials about linux for that many people are delighted especially on the Ubuntu forum that you promote linux. I support and follow you even if most tutorials with linux are for beginners nothing that no one was born learned. Thanks for understanding, with respect Iulian.

  29. I do not understand why you're lying so with the introduction. On the video's cuprinsu repeat the same things. Finally, it was easier to run these commands in the console, along with a brief explanation?

And after that code has to be entered in the terminal.
    Please… Congratulations anyway! 😉

      Well ... Congratulations anyway!

If you read this tutorial 1 page (page 1 the comments that you are 4 it was) someone else asked the same thing as you and I answered:

      Now for you also add:

These tutorials are not addressed connoisseurs or Linux master! but beginners who first put your hands on Linux or have no idea what is Linux. How can you tell a man that just barely has Linux installed (most are afraid to install the Linux operating system in general) to open terminalu and give commands you said?

That's why people run from Linux, I noticed on the forum that many who help so much know how to tell you: "open the terminal and give these codes"

although people specify… I'm new to Linux etc etc.

Then the community makes topics like "domle the world runs away from Linux, or why does it run away… why isn't Linux so used?"

Look, it's hard for us to explain, and we send people "under the hood" instead of showing them its power in the GUI in the simple, mouse mode… If you put the terminal in front of it and throw it there, you discourage it and you scare him from the start and as far as I know ubuntu wants to be user friendly right?

People need to know what a repository is, what cidecuri are, what they are used for, why they are not included in the system, and so on, we don't call ourselves YouTube (I know I'm repeating) we have our standards, and I think that that's what people love us and we have so many visitors, that we give them with a teaspoon not with an "ax" on their head and so on two hairs "they go to the terminal" as others do. If the tutorial bores you, you can stop at any time, you can scroll, or you can leave the site… it's simple!

So… where did I go wrong?

  30. Ok, you clarified me 😉 But to survive in Linux, believe me you need to know some commands in the console!
By the way, try the more developed your vocabulary, your expression is difficult.

  31. By the way, you still trying to develop vocabulary, your expression is difficult.

    • Detox: By the way, you still trying to develop vocabulary, your expression is difficult.

Which expression do you mean? Verbal or written? or you were referring to your expression with "believe me you need to know some commands in the console!" ???

I have not seen in any novel or Romanian book formulated "I have to"

Mote in my eye you see is ugly, but you forgot yours?

  32. For as long as I got money??

    • Detox: For as long as I got money??

We are not communists and not banam users crazy!
Most likely you have internet at your RDS and was allocated an IP that was banned from our website, empties the cache browseului and give a restart Internet connection or restart your pc to allocate another ip.

Money is received for other vulgar words addressed to download the tutorials.

Did you make the updates after installing the operating system? (click on System> Administration> Update Manager then click on Check) after doing the updates give a restart to the PC. Are you sure you have internet when you want to install codecs? Open the firefox and enter about 4 pages and see if you have internet. You can't install those codecs if you don't have an internet connection!

Install Guest Additions. Type up in the search box on the right on the black margin: "How to share between the real system and the one in the virtual box, the virtual machine being Ubuntu Linux" enter and you will find the tutorial. There it was explained and shown how to do what interests you.
As prompted for the password every set you do. It is quite normal for Ubuntu Linux. That's the advantage of the cause for which Ubuntu is an operating system secure. You can enable root user (it is not recommended) you no longer require a password every time.
