How to start a computer remotely via the internet with WOL or wake on lan magic packets - HD video tutorial

In this video tutorial we will explain how you can start a remote computer with a small free program called Magic Packet Sender WOL.

First of all we have to check some settings of the network card and bios, network card must support Wake on Lan, most integrated network card on the motherboard supports Wake On Lan, NICs on pci hardly bear so the lower level options (due to cost reductions) actually cheap these NICs (10-15 ron) have only the bare essentials and nothing more.

Wake On Lan is not a problem for static IP connections but the problems occur when we talk about dynamic IPs, the problem with dynamic IP is that when you turn off the computer the connection is lost, we found a solution to this problem by using of a router together with a subdomain from DynDns, many routers have support for Dynamic Dns, meaning they are able to update the IP and send it to the DynDns server whenever it changes, so we no longer have to worry about the IP dynamically, apart from that we have the advantage of a free domain like: "name.homeip.net" where instead of "name" you can pass anything that comes to mind, you can pass your name or just a funny word.

After you have solved it with the settings in the router from the section Dynamic Dns you have to make a Virtual Server or Port Forwarding for the Ip of the computer you want to wake up, even if we have only one PC you still have to do Port Forwarding for port “9” on the “UDP” protocol, the IP for which Virtual Server (port forwarding) is to be made should look something like this: 192.168 ……

The application that we use is very simple to use, simply install and launch it, we need to know the IP of the computer you want to wake him and MAC network card, in case of dynamic IP will It is created by DynDNS domain and also MAC network card then press the SEND button.

This video tutorial deals only with the static and dynamic IP method from RDS (PPPoE connection), for the clients from Romtelecom (clicknet) the words in the tutorial are not valid, I will try to make a video tutorial dedicated especially to this type of connection because there is more to talk about and the complexity is greater, which is why I decided not to address the subject of Romtelecom in this tutorial, the clicknet network requires a different approach due to the fact that it is built on telephone cable and it does not offer such elasticity the sea we need.

We wish you a pleasant and please refrain from jokes do not abuse this method to turn computers acquaintances, is not pleasant start to your PC out of nowhere on your computers use this method.

To see what kind of IP you, write in google my ip you enter, click on the first result and see what ip you, then do you restart your PC and go and google, write and my ip and see if the same ip as the one before you restart or another, if you altu means that you have a dynamic ip or how she mention some root if it is the same as before the restart means you have a static ip, fixed!

  13. @Teodor: Each router has the address like "192.168 ……", this address can be found in the router's manual or if you are connected right click on the connection in the tray and press "STATUS" then press the "support" tab there you will have Default Gateway which is the address of the router, if you want more details press the details button.
Another option is: Start / Run here write "cmd" press Enter then enter the command "ipconfig / all" (in that black window) and it will display all the information about your network cards and the connections you have at that moment.

    1. First of all, in order not to have the same confusion over and over again: a routable IP means to be VISIBLE ON THE INTERNET, no matter what it is, dynamic or static! Not only the dynamic one is routable, ie visible on the Internet, but also the static one! As much as possible - depending on the contract with the respective ISP - both types of IPs can be non-routable, ie non-visible on the Internet!

    2. For those who want to be sure that, using the WOL application, there is no possibility that once you start the PC remotely, to be able to enter it, do so (for those with Win XP) with the following set on the "remote" computer:
    - (for those who entered XP without logg-are) enter Control
Panel> User Accounts> Change an Account> and click on the user
to turn on the computer, then Create a Password,
    to create a password to that account;
    - if you do not already have it installed, install the teamviewer CA application
SERVICE (F.IMPORTANT!) In order to enter the password in
the remote field of the Windows of the "remote" computer (cel
    you want open it remotely;
    - precisely because the teamviewer application runs like
"Service" makes it possible to log in to the Windows of the PC
"Remote", that is, long before you can see
    the "remote" PC screen.

    3. For Christ-admin:

After I finally "woke up" a desktop on an RDS connection, having a Canyon CN-WF514 router and a dynamic IP, I managed without the slightest problem to make the remote start of the same desktop using a connection - this time - Clicknet, from Romtelecom, which, according to Cristi's suspicions, has nothing to do with the fact that the Internet signal is provided on a telephone line, but has the sets - otherwise, similar - that must be to do them in the Modem-Router provided by Romtelecom. In my case, a SpeedTouch516v6 modem-router, which I ported to port "9" and in which, due to the fact that I have dynamic IP, I also entered the respective settings from a dyndns account. .com ". Specifically, I used only the modem router mentioned above (in "routing" mode), and not a cascading router with the SpeedTouch516v6 modem router. Even if I used / used my Canyon router, cascading with the SpeedTouch modem router, I'm sure I would succeed just as easily, for two simple reasons: firstly because I could use, for simplicity, SpeedTouch modem-router in "bridge" mode and I would only have to do sets in the cascaded router (Canyon), and secondly because, even if I used the modem-router in routing mode ”, Also for simplification, I would set it in DMZ and thus it would ensure the passage of traffic through it through any port, all I need to do is forward the port“ 9 ”in the cascaded router (Canyon).

NOTE: The most important aspect, which Cristi failed to mention: for those who have dynamic IPs - like me - no matter where they have the connection, but also have a modem router (as in Clicknet) or any other router type - first of all, they have to set their wired network cards with fixed IP, otherwise they will do port forwarding on a certain port in vain, if, due to DHCP, the respective PC, modem-router- they, the routers assign a different IP of the respective class, at each start / restart of the PC, or at the change of the plug of the network cable, in another ethernet “output” of the router. Both the SpeedTouch516v6 modem router and the Canyon CN-WF514 router allow the assignment of a fixed IP, a computer, even with DHCP active, based on the network card's MAC of the connected PC.

Hi. Super great phase… keep it up guys ba

  47. @MANDATORYBravo, congratulations.
Thanks for the complement, I have tried to clicknet the net, so I was booked statements.
Now that you've proven that it works I think I'll go with a supplement about WOL (Wake on LAN) on clicknet.
    Thank you again and wait.

  48. @MANDATORY: It would be good if you could say the "exact" settings you made in the Alcatel modem because I will do it at Huawei and I can't talk about Alcatel Speed Touch because I don't have it available.
Please insist on dyndns settings (where you put the settings in modem)
    Of course if you want.

  49. MANDATORY said

WOL in Romtelecom, in this description, starts from the idea that the Alcatel SpeedTouch516v6 modem-router is first and foremost - for simplicity, but also for the fact that this description is much closer to reality - configured in the routing, meaning that he is the one who keeps the connection "alive" - as Cristi said, a connection that is PPPoE. We also start from the consideration that Romtelecom has assigned us a dynamic IP, meaning that it changes at least every time we restart the computer or the respective modem-router. IP or IP address - as you want to call it, actually changes whenever the ISP (aka ISP) wants, not just every time your PC or modem router is turned on.

The first step to be done: enter the configuration menu of the modem-router through an Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, etc.) where we will enter Home Network> Devices> where you select PC- connected, choose (something above on the same page!) Configure and click on it. Once you enter here, check the box Always use the same Address, then click on Apply and thus, we made the permanent assignment, the same IP addresses, to the network card on the computer we want to "wake up", this assignment being possible based on the MAC of the respective network card. Make a note of this IP address, so that you don't have to go looking for it in the network card settings, as it will be used a little later.

Step two: Also in the configuration menu of this modem router, go to the left and click on Toolbox, click on Game and Application Sharing, go a little further in the footer of the page where you will click on Create a New Game or Application. Here, in the Name field, you will type what you want your new application to be called. I, for example, called it "Wake On LAN" to make it much easier to identify. I advise you to name it the same, to make your work easier. A little further down, check the Manual Entry of PortMaps> Next and then enter port "9" in all three cells, located next to "Any". Continue by pressing the Add button. We do not leave the page yet and in its footer we have the option Assign a Game or Application to a local network device. We click on it and so we are sent to the page where we will "link", so to speak, our new application, created earlier, called as in the example above: Wake On LAN and in the Game or Application column, we look for this application. Under the Device column, select with the right arrow, from the drop-down list (called in English "drop-down-list), the option after which, enter the IP address that I asked above to write it down. This IP address is actually the IP address assigned, as I said above, permanently, to your network card, based on its MAC.
Continue to push the right button, Add and thus we successfully completed the port forwarding set has the acquis, in menu it this modem router.

Third, we go on the assumption that you have opened an account on the site http://www.dyndns.com and that you have already set-at a host name. Christ made, as far as I know, a tutorial that shows you how to make an account http://www.dyndns.com and how to set a host name, enter it in the account.
Details of this account and host name created http://www.dyndns.comAre required to be inserted into menu it modem router Alcatel SpeedTouch 516v6 as follows:
    - go to Toolbox> Dynamic DNS, click, a little above, on the respective page, on Configure, we are entered in the Dynamic DNS Service page, where: in Enabled, check the respective square, in the username enter the user on which you have chosen it to be attached to the chosen subdomain in the account on http://www.dyndns.comFor creating that host name and Password and Confirm Password to insert password to enter the account http://www.dyndns.com. In right field DynDNS Service is chosen, because it is on this site, after which the host name is inserted with subdomain username chosen on account http://www.dyndns.com. Click Apply and conclude that almost all set-aryl you need to make in the modem router to Rometelecom, Alcatel SpeedTouch516v6.

Example of host name and that set-ares modem router above:

    - “wakeonlan.mine.nu” is the host name set in the account on
http://www.dyndns.com and to be entered in the Host field
    modem router;
    - "wakeonlan" is the username that must be entered in the field
    Username of the modem router.

If you are unclear vis-a-vis the madcap above, expect your coemtnariile on this page.

Sorry for the "sausage" description above, but since I couldn't post a video tutorial, you'll have to go through this description, which is always longer and more tiring than a video clip.

  56. @MANDATORY: Thanks for the tutorial, if you make one sound and you can put it on videotutorial.ro (talking on mail if you want).
Unfortunately my modem seems that people from Huawei forgot to put support dynamic domain can fix it with a new firmware (if you have) if it appears that only those with Alcatel modems can clicknet network Wake on LAN.

  57. MANDATORY said

@ cristi-admin: I will try either by adding the sound to the existing ones, or to restore them - although it is a bit more difficult, because I have problems with the sound in conjunction with the CamStudio application - on the ones already posted.
Indeed, I have already seen two Huawei menus, one of which, it seems, is put by the Romanians and is extraordinarily tangled and I can't help but say that it is deliberately made so complicated - it doesn't look like any other menu. modem-router or router - because you no longer know / could configure it yourself. Why do I say that? Well, for the simple reason that Romtelecom, in addition to the technical service they provide for "all the people" and which is free, but you never know when you get in touch with an operator, they also have that service for a fee, which is taxable at 5 Euro without VAT, regardless of the technical problem and the time you spend with the operator on the phone. This fee will be found later on the respective invoice. It is the same situation with car dealers: it earns after the sale of cars, by extending the warranty and therefore by ensuring a source of existence / financial following the payment of warranty overhauls! So is Romtelecom.
Therefore, it is a mere assumption since this service does not have customers, then the first thing they did, they changed the modem-routers: those from Alcatel, which were more user-friendly and they were replaced with those from Huawei, which, to top it off, they have replaced and menu it compared to the baseline, or to the one that came originally! For the same reason, I, after long search on the internet I managed to find where and how to do port forwarding, but even so, I find it quite cumbersome method compared to other menu other sites such devices!

Being a challenging, exciting topic - this Wake On LAN, due to the fact that it offers increased possibilities for computer users - I did and demonstrated above that WOL is possible from Romtelecom, I went further, not being able to refrain and, contrary to what was said Cristi, I tried to boot remotely and my own laptop, an Acer Aspire 5315-052G12MI, which although it has no set-up in the BIOS to make it possible to boot the laptop remotely, I still managed , just for the simple reason that instead the wired network card with which he came from the factory, allows it. So I made the necessary settings on his network card, just that, because, as I said, I had absolutely nothing to set in the BIOS. There is simply no Power Management or any other name like this that allows remote starting!

For this I used the same Canyon router above, I assigned from this router, to the laptop a fixed IP address (static), I did Port Forwarding also in this router on port 9, UDP protocol, and the connection is from RCS & RDS, with dynamic IP, I also used Dyn DNS, so so far everything is the same with your tutorial.

I went to the other computer - on a desktop - which is connected to that Alcatel SpeedTouch modem router, on a Romtelecom connection and using the application recommended by you: WOL Magic Packet Sender, I managed to start the laptop without the slightest problem, in both situations: with its lid open and the lid closed! It doesn't matter what position the lid is in, it starts in both situations.

Now, that in itself, that start and a laptop is noteworthy, but the question you ask yourself now: it is possible to start a computer with a BIOS that simple, where there is nowhere can these set- ares WOL, but nevertheless could be started only and only because it allows network card?

Although no one can answer me how it is possible to turn the laptop mentioned above, just making set-aryl network card, wired!

  60. A tutorial on how to make share internet between pc 2 favorite sites would be useful for Romtelecom ms

  61. @Daniel: Why not use FTP? We 2 3 tutorials or tutorials if not dedicated protocol and file transfer via FTP! Which in my opinion is a very fast stable and very safe (if you set properly) Write up the Search in right FileZilla FTP or hit enter and you will find tutorials!

  62. MANDATORY said

Closely related to the title tutorial above and many others, but in close contact with your future set-ari and configurations (those who need DDNS neparat!)

For those who have no choice but to contract their Internet connection from Romtelecom (Clicknet) and have not yet done it: that somehow does not accept modem Huawei router SmartAX MT882 because besides menu has a very, very sophisticated, completely lacks the facility of DDNS (Dynamic DNS)? Sooner or later you will need it! Why? Because, Romtelecom, contracts with individuals not provide static IP. Therefore, you definitely have dynamic IP then you will definitely be able to use DDNS site.

To solve this problem, you will have to take some more money out of your pocket for another router to put between the Huawei SmartAX MT882 modem-router and the computer (in other words, to install it in the "cascade". additional costs, which you can avoid from the beginning by not accepting this type of modem-router, so that you are given a modem-router from the Alcatel SpeedTouch series (if possible, or in any case ask for one that also have the DDNS function) - the ones from the Alcatel SpeedTouch series being extraordinarily easy to set up and they also included the DDNS function!

  63. @MANDATORY: and you think Romtelecom compromise with anyone? Think she'll give you another Rooter that you do not like the tie that comes with the package? I do not think I would!

I did nothing but focus on those who are in the situation I mentioned above. I don't know if Romtelecom will make such compromises or not, but at least now the others know what the situation is and at least, it's worth trying… the reason why I come with this type of modem-router - Huawei SmartAX MT882 - is precisely because the vast majority they do not know this about him and he is put in their throats, unknowingly. If there are more who will refuse this type of modem, something will probably be done!
As you, with this website, what do you believe in the idea of helping those who have limited knowledge in computers, it must be done in this regard by informing as many people and places of the shortcomings behind contracts the Clicknet. I mean why would not I share with others this important aspect and shortcoming of the technology provided by Romtelecom! I know it seems fair to others, because even those who follow us will contract a subscription to Clicknet, to make an informed choice, not stupid in the first place, is not it?

Surprisingly enough, NO ONE has noticed that the vast majority of PCs or notebooks (only those that support this feature) can NOT be "woken up" in any form after a longer period of time. ?! Here I mean those who managed to start their computer remotely ("wake up").

Just as you have heard, can not be awakened than a maximum of a few minutes when stopped them from tests made me not up 10 minutes later, but it is an exaggerated.

If you don't believe the above - for those who managed to start their computer remotely - try to start it 10-15 or 20 minutes after stopping them and you will be right!

Therefore, how useful is this function, as long as their remote start, practically can not be done, most of the time, exactly when we want to start them ?! What can be done so that the "awakening" can be done at any time, regardless of the moment of their stopping ??? !!!

  70. Therefore, NO ONE, but absolutely NO ONE from the administration of this site has been able to find, so far, a solution to start the computer remotely in the WAN - because in the LAN it can be done no matter how long it will be since the shutdown computer - after a longer period of time ?!
So allow me to say with certainty that this tutorial has done nothing to show that this solution is so limited that it does not use virtually anything! To be viable and actually useful, should WOL can be used regardless of the time elapsed from the off that PC!

Why I asked the question in the comment July 4 2009? Because we found some indications on the Internet that would resolve this situation, but unfortunately my knowledge beyond my current and by umrare, should, as a solution to this tutorial, have been sought by the administration of the site, for completing this videotutorial. I do not know if you noticed but there are issues on which I came to you to talk about them.
We are not here to put researchers on your behalf, we whet your appetite and show you the first steps you must develop SUBJECTS.

  72. Some tutorials - like this one - are not part of the ones that should, necessarily continued by those who enjoy these tutorials and in no case, necessarily by those attached to more than one particular field, as suggested, above, by Cristi-admin.

However, I also come with 2 solutions to start a computer remotely by Wake on LAN:

The first is to have a server, no matter how simple and cheap that runs permanently and that you can enter on it, remotely and from it to access the application "wake on lan magic packets" that commands the opening of a certain computer in the same network. Of course, this can also be the cheapest laptop, which stays permanently open and is connected wired to the respective router.

A second solution is to purchase a router to support a firmware update, especially those with Broadcom processors, which can be upgraded with an open source operating system, on Linux, such as Tomato, Open WRT, DD-WRT, etc. Thus, you can enter remotely on the respective router, which thus has the possibility of Wake on LAN (and not Wake On WAN), which receives the WOL command and transmits it, in LAN, to the computer you want to be " woken up".

NOTE: The reason I brought up a router that can not be about Wake On LAN or Wake On WAN without the router connected to the Internet, regardless of the situation! That if you do not have a reliable server that can run command Wake On LAN, what comes into question here, is a very expensive solution, both sphere and logistically.

    • Sal.Eu have a router with dd-wrt dir 300 him and go for a longer time if the PC is not turned up to be no response, after you physically turn the stop button and it then can be trzit and with Wake on LAN from dd-wrt.Care could be the problem??

MANDATORY: Some tutorials - as at present - not part of those who must, necessarily pursued by those who enjoy these tutorials and in no way necessarily those attached to more than one specific area, as suggested, above, the by Cristi-admin.Totusi come with everything I 2 solutions to start a computer remotely by Wake on LAN: The first is to have a server, no matter how simple and inexpensive to run constantly and which you can enter on him from a distance and from it to access the application "Wake on LAN magic packets" to order the opening of a specific computer on the same network. Welcome. I have a D-Link router and RDS network with dynamic ip. It can be done directly on the router set to have static IP (until the power is off) entering INTERNET MANUAL SETUP and choose the option ALWAYS CONNECT MODE SELECT. I think it's so much easier than with a DNS for those who router as mine. Other routers do not know if they have that option. Have a good day.

  91. Hello guys! I also have a question, but first I have to share something with you. For several months my PC was spied "hard" so my passwords were stolen from anything. When I realized it was too late but I reinstalled Windows, I put AVG and Comodo as an additional firewall plus I use some programs (such as Malwarwbytes Anti-Malware) with which I scan my system almost daily (Who fried with soup, puff and yogurt). I also searched the net to find out about the methods used by hackers to get into other people's PCs and in principle I understood that the main method is to steal your ip and from here everything goes … My question is: "Can Ip be stolen only through Messenger?" when the victim is talking to the "aggressor" or are there other methods? How can I better protect myself so that I don't suffer what I suffered before because I tell you that it's horrible to have spied on 24/7 people who have no other occupation than the state in front of the PC and harmed others. Thank you in advance for your answers!

I only have "wake on magic packed" wake on patern "wake on lan from poweroff" on my integrated network card. I switched them all to enabled. In Bios am Acpi setting. As far as I know, this section sets the power supply characteristics and other configuration information for the PC, hibernation or hibernation.etc. Even if I switched them all to enabled, Ddns account "succeded in router" (I use tplink 842 nd) plus forwarding and virtual server enabled does not work. I can neither turn it on nor stop it. Is it somehow due to network cards that means it does not support more wake functions or ..?

This thing bothered me too. There's a problem with the router. Some routers remove the computer from the ARP list a few minutes after the computer is turned off. That is, in Romanian, the router removes that computer from the list of active clients. Solving this problem can be easy to quite difficult… depending on the router model and firmware used.
For example tplink solving it here:
      https://nowhere.dk/articles/wake-on-lan-from-wan-with-a-tp-link-router

For custom dd-wrt firmware, enter administration — commands and type a command like this:
arp-s-i br0 192.168.xxx.xxx AA: AA: AA: AA: AA: AA
Instead of poppies, are those that count. Then save it gives startup.

For other routers do you see. Hopefully not need telnet or ssh.
Be careful, a simple reservation (static lease) may not be enough. There is a difference between a reservation (static lease) and a static ARP entry. Maybe for some routers, a simple reservation might be enough… but for others it is not…

In case anyone sees this article, and has the same problem, it's good to know.

  103. Hi Cristi, I did a NAS from PC components and I would like to know if you can use this option to turn on the NAS remotely? I have to buy a network card that supports WOL, if so what should I socket connect it to the motherboard just like you said in the tutorial? Thanks.

Howdy! Master, although it is demonstrated on an older OS, your tutorial is very well thought out, easy to follow and valid even today. I want to set this story on my home desktop so I can access it from work. I am an RCS-RDS client but the "problem" is that I use two routers at home. One, and the first in fact, makes the PPOE connection and the second router, on which the desktop runs, is connected to the first cable router with dynamic IP. The question is, in addition, what setting should I make for the second one to send the "magic packet" to my desktop?
