The difference in performance between drivers, IDE vs. Microsoft AHCI Vs. Intel AHCI - video tutorial

Hi friends, in this video tutorial we will continue the incursion into the realm of storage, we make a comparison between SATA in IDE mode, Microsoft AHCI and Intel AHCI in the last tutorial I showed how to activate AHCI for better performance of your hard disk, you need not do much, some settings and ready, do not spend money, do not install software, modify hardware, though we get a better performance from the hard drive using site AHCI (Advanced host controller interface) technology that makes us hard drive smarter and more disciplined.
You need to understand from the beginning some things, hard drives SATA can operate in 3 modes, the first mode is IDE the HDD operates as a drive on the IDE, the second way is AHCI mode, in AHCI mode enabled all capabilities with SATA interface was endowed (NCQ, hot pluging etc.), the third mode is RAID, here two or more hard drives may work together to increase performance (RAID 0 or 10), safety (raid 1) or to provide redundancy (rAID 5 or 6) are several types of rAID arrays but not what we talk today, maybe in another tutorial we will address this topic and of course if you are interested.
Almost all hard drives today have NCQ (native command quering), a function that streamlines work hard disk, can not be used without NCQ AHCI enabled community.
Hot pluging is another advanced feature that can be used after enabling AHCI's so we can connect and disconnect disk drives while the system is working, just like a USB stick, this is extremely useful to those who have hard disk ESATA external CEs.
AHCI site helps us to use highly efficient hard drive into a multi tasking environment, where multiple applications running simultaneously is felt the need for a higher IOPS.
The test that was done for the tutorial highlights effective AHCI's compared to how IDE to 4K-64Threads AHCI the shattered IDE, the transfer speed IDE pulled 22.93 MB / s while AHCI-ROM driver Microsoft pulled 102.97 MB / s and IOPS IDE has been felt inferiority IDE pointed 5871 while AHCI got in 26359.
I hope these results will convince the maturity and efficiency AHCI site, I see no reason to stay in IDE, a management mode is not recommended for old hard drives or SSDs modern.
In test both drivers AHCI, Intel that Microsoft were comporata copy were small differences between them in favor of Intel but the main idea is that AHCI is well above IDE, this especially in multi tasking where AHCI made a demonstration of efficiency.
Assay method:
Soft benchmark - AS SSD Benchmark 1.5.3784.37609
OCZ Vertex SSD hard drive testat- 2 60GB
Chipset - Intel P35 + ICH9R
Drivers - Intel Matrix Storage 03.2009, Microsoft AHCI 6.1.7600.16385
The test was run twice for each configuration, the best result was captured.
I don't see why you would stay on IDE, if the motherboard supports AHCI don't stop thinking…

  2. Dear friends, the hard drive is a "problem" component.
Hard is like a salesman, he has to do too many things at once, unfortunately is not able because it is limited by the mechanics, must serve customers, must incaseza money, you have to be careful not to stand without, do not steal clients heaven.
IDE = customers who queue up, clutter, multiple requests to the seller.
AHCI = a bodyguard that order, no longer put forward.
Sorry but so far simplify things.

  3. Hi. You will not notice any performance passing from IDE / AHCI to our eyes and I am sure that many have a player / browser and open mess and with this thing you will not feel anything. AHCI "pronounces" more than a year Multitasking .

    • Jellfis: Salut.Nu you obs no performance going from IDE / AHCI our eyes and I'm sure many have a player / browser open and mess with stuff you will not feel them nimic.AHCI 'rule' more year Multitasking.

Do you still pay much attention to me here? Go and lasagna… Of course you won't see the difference in two, three applications, but differentiate between two PCs, one with AHCI and the other without, both with the same applications with the same components and 10-20 applications running, and you will see that the one with AHCI moves better, what the hell did you not see that test, I'm sure that Cristi didn't cheat that test, it's too SERIOUS Cristi to do something like that!

Enter through the IDE in windows. Integrated into the AHCI driver in the new windows with nLite. Then install Windows with integrated AHCI. Do not forget to enable ACHI in BIOS before installing Windows.

        Hello!
By default, Windows kit, for example 7 8 or on x32 or x64 comes without integrated AHCI?
If so, you have no choice but to install Windows IDE and then put him on AHCI in the BIOS, SafeBoot Minimal, Microsoft AHCI drivers draws and then return to normal boot.
        So is it?

Another is the problem, namely, that there are still many new computers that you can not put than XP, Windows Vista or 7 not. and the installation kit is Windows XP SATA driver. or maybe you get a laptop and want to put XP on it, and you wake up you can not install SATA, and you have to set in the BIOS IDE compatible. I think it would be a welcome tutorial for adding SATA drivers are on the CD installation or after installation XP, for adding SATA drivers. can set the sata in bios.
I tried to put a sata laptop later and I got errors, so I left the BIOS IDE compatible.

It gives that error because it is not AHCI enabled in bios, if enabled in the BIOS it will get blue screen.
It's a vicious circle, I'll do a tutorial after I do some tests.

View as greseti! It looks like you did not understand it or what a Backup. now if you do not backup your Windows has AHCI driver and then make a custom xp cd with whom you built your AHCI and install it if you're gonna restore the old windows (which does not have AHCI) again not to have AHCI :). That's because Windows will return to exactly the state it was in when you made the backup (ie without AHCI)

These days I'll try several options to install AHCI driver on a XP installed, the simplest way I will publish.

    • Cristi-admin: I'll try several options these days to install AHCI driver on an XP install, the easiest method I will publish.

Hi Cristi. I recently read the discussions about AHCI vs IDE. As I saw, opinions are divided. Even you said in a tutorial from February 2009 that, I quote "… AHCI does not necessarily offer a big boost of performance… the configuration of the AHCI in the bios would be made, rather, to force the transition to Win. Vista ", so that now you can support the superiority of AHCI, largely logical. What I ask you, if you can, to answer me two things that I will point out below:
      1. laptop-for which I have a hp 6830s with a hard sata2 of 320 5400 rpm GB used in a home is worth or not AHCI enabled? Feels a noticeable difference?
      2. I saw that there is a sure way of creating a custom cd win. in introducing diverse AHCI, then do instalarea.Eu am a professional win.xp sp3 going ok and that I would like you to e dezinstalez.Ideea as asked and Catalin81 above, if you can insert AHCI driver and can then enable AHCI in the BIOS in a safe for win.xp instalat.Am already seen you said you try some variations to this and I was curious if you found any functional.
Whatever the answer, make beautiful and useful things here and I hope you can continua.Multumesc for your attention and I hope to find an answer to mele.Toate good.

But I am also passionate far as you. I too can make a lousy install and do not know where I'm looking document to learn. and when I get to teach others but often nothing.
I tell everyone "brothers, look and learn how to reset a PC so that once you get your PC you won't be without it for life" but in vain. every 3-4 weeks he comes to me again and again… (when the same OS keeps me sometimes for half a year).

  18. Hello. Excellent work you do. I recommended this site to all my friends and I tested them to see if I follow your tutorials. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they are interested, look at them and learn from you. There are a lot of such tutorials on the net, but none of them rise to your level, neither qualitatively nor professionally. As someone who wrote in a comment said, "No one knows them all," or as your motto says:"Do you think you know everything about the PC?" or as Einstein said, "The more you know, the more to know," I look forward to the raid tutorial.
Continue, persevere and especially not you indulge in polemics!
    Succes

  19. Please Cristi to do and explain what each of the raids do 0,1,5,10 and if necessary the external one e-SATA JBOD. Thank you I knew that data can be lost like when I did I read on the sites at emag at pcgarage at several forums and they said that if they are not stable hdd and one is busted I lose everything. Or if I want to keep 24 × 7 pc running non-stop I need special hdd for something like this I read that it burns I don't know what if I exceed 24hx7 days but I see that it works, I didn't have any problems with WDC. He said to someone from EMAG when I bought my case I asked which hdd are good for raid performance and he said Seagate and it looks like seagate is doing better now everyone with his opinion. At win 7 for raid 0 I didn't need drivers and taken alone and after I quickly put storage that goes razor. A good day !! 🙂

Cumuti the IDE in BIOS, go into Windows, go to the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard, download the AHCI driver, install it, restart your PC and you do not let him get into Windows but quickly get in BIOS, switch on AHCI and voila.
    Go here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H77M/#download

Hi Cristi! Very good tutorial, but it was more useful if the tests were done with an HDQ capable NCQ, because most users do not have a PC with SSD. Indeed for SSDs it is recommended to say even mandatory to use the AHCI module which brings great performance enhancements in this case by activating TRIM technology, I see that everyone who has HDD throws themselves to switch to AHCI seeing the results in this tutorial in which the tests were done with an SSD. On the HDD things are different, here the test results are not so spectacular, there are really advantages on the HDD (NQC and hot pluging) but also disadvantages. From the tests I did on a Western Digital Blue 1TB together with a motherboard with intel P45 + ICH10R chipset, the only performance increase is at 4K-64Threads where the performance almost doubles the rest in the other cases there was no difference from IDE mode. Even in AHCI mode the access time increased by a few milliseconds, I did dozens of tests and each time in AHCI mode the access time was longer regardless of whether the driver from the microsoft driver or the newest driver was used on the manufacturer's website. intel driver. Another disadvantage would be that when starting the PC in AHCI mode, the motherboard stays a little longer when doing the POST. With the latest intel driver there are some constant drops in reading and writing data as if it were suturing, which is not the case with the microsoft driver and the manufacturer, probably the driver has been optimized for chipset motherboards- newer hatreds. So there are some disadvantages in AHCI mode…!

  37. Hello,
I have an Asus P5KC card, HDD 250GB sata2, in no way windows or any other utility sees it properly than UltraDma5, so the speed of the pacifier am. I installed, AHCI, AHCI's mother, in the BIOS it is only as an option: or RAID compatible.

  38. Hello !
I have the following queries: I selected AHCI in BIOS, I created with nLite an XP embedded 32-bit drivers, I installed XP, I installed Intel Matrix Storage Console.
I checked with Everest and HDtune that my hard drive supports NCQ, but in Everest I saw an information related to the hard drive: "NCQ Priority Information Not Supported". I mention that: "Native Command Queuing Supported"
I did some tests .. and did not change anything to the installation of the IDE, you know how to do petnru enable AHCI in Windows XP ..: (
Motherboard: I Rock XFire 775 VSTA
    HDD: Model ID WDC WD1600AAJS-00PSA0
