I think you're talking about "PF Usage" (which means Page File Usage meaning swap usage - the memory you need at a time). Page File Usage in Task Manager / Performance shows you the load for all virtual memory, both RAM and pagefile. PF Usage increases as you open other programs. Ideally, PF Usage should be about half or lower than Total Physical Memory. If it's bigger… then you have a problem.
This problem is solved by 3 methods:
- reinstall the operating system;
- buy more memory;
- go to Task Manager and go to Processes, then sort by Mem Usage and see which programs use the most memory, then uninstall them if you don't need them or stop them if you don't use them at the moment - but if you are good at IT.
Now to explain the phenomenon:
- Exceeding Total Physical Memory means: if you need 600 Mb ram and you only have 512 available, the remaining 88 Mb "takes" them from the hard drive. That is, use the physical space in the hard drive for extra. The speed of an hdd is much slower in the process of writing / reading / deleting and then any application that you open it after the available memory is full, will go much slower.
