I have a GB HDD 500 3 divided into partitions. The first I installed XP on the second Win 7, and most things I have on the last partition, which is the highest. In Windows 7 you can enter with a partitioning software eg Easeus partition master home and format the partition with Windows XP. Then with the help of EasyBCD delete XP from the boot menu, or from Windows 7, from "msconfig". As for running VMware, you can install it normally in Windows 7, but if you create the virtual disk on the XP partition, when you format that partition, you lose the virtual disk. My advice is to configure the virtual disk on the third partition, so when reinstalling / formatting, nothing will be lost.
PS. You can install Windows 8 instead of XP after formatting, if the partition has enough space, <25GB.
