How to use the internet from your computer to your smartphone via the USB data cable - video tutorial

Hi friends, in today's tutorial we will see how we can give internet a Android smartphone from your computer via USB data cable. The Android operating system by default supports USB tethering and WiFi Tethering which means that we can give internet computer, laptop or any device from smartphone. Basically we can turn your smartphone into a router / HotSpot that can connect multiple devices to have an internet connection. Unfortunately the Android operating system does not support and Reverse tethering but we do this using some commands and Terminal Emulator, an application can be downloaded from Android Market.
Why would we want to give internet from computer to smartphone?
For the simple reason that it can not hold a wireless router and do not have sufficient financial resources to buy a data plan from one of the mobile providers. And as a dead smartphone is a device without an internet connection, you will need to have an alternative to connect to our Internet gadget.
Here's what we need to give internet from your computer to our Android phone:
- our Android device must be rooted
- we will need to have Busybox installed which should normally be installed once the smartphone is rooted
- we must have the Android Terminal Emulator application installed
- USB data cable to connect the smartphone to the computer (usually it comes with the purchase of the smartphone)
What we have shown in this video tutorial works on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.
That said, I invite you to watch the video tutorial to see exactly how the internet can give our Android smartphone to the computer via USB data cable

  • mmm it's not very practical ... that is, net on the smartphone is desirable for mobility even if "mobility" means the restricted area of a wifi signal ... but so with a USB cable connected ... rather stay directly on the pc where you have a big screen and a physical keyboard ... and in addition who buys a 3g-wifi smartphone without a data subscription or at least a "poor" wifi router, even if he doesn't know why he is buying it! (In my opinion)
anyway .. Congratulations Adrian! have shown that it can.

This tutorial was requested in the past by a user who said he did not have a wireless router, could not afford any data subscription and said that his smartphone received a gift from someone ... He wanted to install applications and everything had was a dial-up connection if I'm not mistaken and a computer. There are also such cases ... maybe your wireless router will break down one day and you don't have the money to buy another one immediately and you don't even have money on the card to pay for a data offer.
Your word ... this tutorial proves more that something like this is possible even if Android is not designed to do that and why not admit it, this kind of tutorial works well in my portfolio :)

The native operating system Android has no reverse tethering, you use a phone with HTC Sense interface and tools, we know that HTC implements all sorts of functions in addition to the interface. All HTC has introduced the Wireless Tethering function on Windows Mobile phones long before functions and Wireless Tethering USB Tethering to be available on Android.

There had to be someone like Radu to contradict, right? To say that white is not white ... that it can also be black :)
The clean Android doesn't look like the one on your Radule smartphone, you have an HTC Sense interface as my colleague said. Search on "goagal" AOSP and you will see what a native, clean, pure Android interface looks like

Apart from the fact that it has a beautiful shell, what does the iPhone do? :) The thigh is less important, what is important is what you do with it after purchase, do you admire it as beautiful? And let it be Android smartphones that have a thorn in their side, which are more or less handsome ...

  • Dear Adrian,
I would have tried - out of curiosity - to get internet from the computer, but my tablet (Flytouch 4, with Android 2.2) does not have Tethering (in the section Wireless & network settings I have only 4 lines: 1. WI-FI, 2. Wi- In settings, 3. VPN settings and 4. Mobile networks). Moreover, I can't even connect the computer tablet to the USB cable (the tablet didn't come with a USB cable, but I bought one). Could you give me some advice on how to connect the tablet to the computer via a data cable (USB)? Thank you in advance.

you addressed Adrian directly but I try to give you an answer as I know how ...
for the beginning you have to have the rooted tablet (you can find a video tutorial about this or search on xda developers) then after rooting you check to have on the tablet the utilities that adrian has and ... you can do your job;)

  • Thank you, Catalin, for help. I specify that I routed the tablet and I have all the necessary programs (and not only), but I can't follow the path indicated by Adrian because my tablet does not have Tethering. Secondly, I don't know how to make the connection between the computer and the tablet via USB cable (obviously, I can make the physical connection between the tablet and the PC, but neither the tablet notifies the PC nor vice versa - in other words, I don't see the PC files on the tablet as well as those on a memory stick). Thirdly, I would like (this is a dream of mine) to put Linux Ubuntu on the tablet, but from what I found on the net I did not clarify how I should proceed - or it may not work on my tablet this thing. In general, a tablet PC can be connected to the computer via USB cable and, secondly, Linux can be installed on a tablet PC with Android 2.2. Is the tablet I have (FlyTouch 4) an exception? How do I find the answer to these questions?
