How to partition correctly and how to install Ubuntu Linux in dual boot with Windows XP - tutorial video

A few days ago we present how to install Ubuntu Linux with Wubi without changing WinXP but I saw that many of you desire is to install it in dual bot, but this time for real and not through Wubi.
Here comes this day, partitioning and installing Ubuntu Linux is extremely simple, all you need to succeed in putting Ubuntu properly in dual boot with Windows is to be very careful with this tutorial. Ideally, for those of you who can afford it, to have 2 hard drives and to dedicate one of them entirely to Ubuntu. If you have 2 hard drives unplug the hard drive that you already have in Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, do not remove it from the drive but simply carefully pull the power plug and the connector that connects it to the motherboard, and leave it connected to the motherboard and source only the hardware you want to dedicate to the Ubuntu Linux operating system. You go and download an ISO image with Ubuntu from the official website of Ubuntu Romania http://www.ubuntu.ro make a bootable CD with that ISO image. If you don't know how to burn a bootable CD, my colleague Cristi showed in several tutorials with different burning software how you can do this. Write in the box "search on videotutorial.ro…" at the top right of the site: "CDBurnerXP" (free CD burning software) or "Nero" or "ImgBurn" (free CD burning software) or "how a bootable CD is made ”or only“ Bootable CD ”, press enter and you will find the tutorials.
Assuming that you have done all the above steps, all we have to do is insert the bootable CD containing an ISO image with Ubuntu Linux in the drive, we set in the BIOS for the system to boot the first time from the CD-ROM (only in if you have not already set this) or press the key for the quick boot menu (supported by only a few motherboards, for example on Gigabyte cards press the F12 key navigate with the arrows "up" - "down" CD-ROM press Enter and the system will boot from the CD)
If you do not have a quick boot menu and you do not know how to set the BIOS for your system to start booting from the CD for the first time, my colleague Cristi made a tutorial in which he explained the BIOS, including this. To find the tutorial we type in the box “search on videotutorial.ro…” located in the upper right: “some brief explanations about the BIOS” press Enter and you will find the tutorial.
Now that everything is ready the rest of the steps are simple and are presented in great detail in the video tutorial below. You can install Ubuntu Linux in dual boot with windows and without disconnecting the hard drive with windows but in time when you want to get rid of Linux you will have "problems" in the sense that the GRUB menu will "ride" the windows boot manager and even if you format the hard drive where Linux is installed, the Linux GRUB will remain on the primary partition on the Master hard drive (the hard drive on which Windows is located) and so when you want to enter windows it is very possible that you will not be able to boot into windows. If you don't have 2 hard drives, all you have to do is put Ubuntu Linux on the same hard drive with windows on another partition and you can't prevent GRUBU from running Linux on C (partition with windows) but if you have 2 hard drives you have this possibility to make the 2 operating systems not know each other and not have any problem by simply disconnecting the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Linux and then obviously after you have installed Ubuntu can reconnect the hard drive with Windows. Another mention on this method of installing ubuntu Linux on another hard drive and disconnecting the one with windows during installation is that when you want to enter Ubuntu you will have to enter the BIOS and Boot Prioriti to set from which hard to boot.

In conclusion: If you choose to install Ubuntu on the same hard but on another partition or another hard but without disconnect the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Ubuntu, you can switch between the operating systems 2 by a simple restart. And if you choose to install Ubuntu on another hard and disconnect the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Ubuntu, to access Ubuntu will always have to enter the BIOS and change the boot priorities between the 2 drives.

But let's look better together tutorial.

Remember, if you have suggestions, complaints or additions do not hesitate to write in the comments box, de-also if you met the comments box a user has a problem and you can help him, do not hesitate to do it, the only way we can do this place better, see the comments box!

Enjoy !

  • you can take those who have rds and version 9.10 and the connection to the net is simple without graphics, enter the terminal and type the command (sudo pppoeconf), very simple

  • Wrap...

I would also like to know what Theme you use on XP Adrian ... That black Theme.

    Thank you in advance

  • I also suffered something like this, in the sense that all my partitions disappeared. Initially I set the ext 3 and swap partition, after which ubuntu seemed to start formatting what was to be formatted, but it gave me an error. After I restarted the computer I received the message "Disk boot failure". I inserted a live windows cd and after it loaded, I turned on my computer and noticed that I have no partition (except Ramdisk).
Finally, that live cd also contained the "recover my files" program ... I was lucky.
So a second HDD is required (or a stick 8GB +)

    • vali: And I happened something like that, meaning that I have gone all partitions. Initially I set 3 ext partition and swap, then ubuntu format seemed to start what was to be formatted, but gave me an error. After I restarted the computer I got the message "Disk boot failure". I put a live cd of windows and after he was charged, I stumbled on my computer and see that I do not have any partition (unless Ramdisk).
Finally, the live CD that also contained the "Recover My Files" ... I got lucky.

It's not mandatory but it's safer. As you saw in the tutorial I put Ubuntu on dual boot on the same partition on another hard where it was and windows, and after I finished installing Ubuntu nothing happened, I and windows and Ubuntu, just gotta be very careful when you partition! More than likely you select the partition which was C's and have Windows on it. If you pay attention to the instructions and you do not have to screw you!

As you can see I have had it out OK without damaging anything.

  • I got rid of that bug in the boot in another way (another one):
MyComputer (clickdreapta)-system properties-advanced-startup and recovery (settings)
and from there I selected "Edit" and it reaches the same notepad page from which the line in question is deleted.

Yes it is, there are several ways, thank you for completing. No matter which way you go, I preferred to show my method so that those who do not know ... on this occasion learned to make hidden folders visible, and thus learned that Windows actually hides many files. In the pc there is not only what can be seen !!!

    • Cristi: But it is not necessary to make a / boot partition? which have 32 64 or MB?

It was done, look more closely at the tutorial or made 3 partitions one "/" Ext4 with logging then one "/ home" where the media files will stay etc also Ext4 with logging and the last "swap area" that will be used by the system in case that you will no longer have memory available. You don't have to "/ boot" because GRUBUL will go to the Master partition or hard drive anyway (in this case partition C where Windows is)

    • Marius-Iulian: Finally you made a tutorial ubuntu. I was wondering when this would happen. If you need help with tutorials on ubuntu will help with placere.windows is evil use Linux (ubuntu Especially)

Cristi: But it is not necessary to make a / boot partition? which have 32 64 or MB?

No need to partition / boot, since Grub is a boot that is installed in the master boot record MBR meaning that already exists on HD and is independent of other partitions.

  • For those who wish to net from ubuntu 9.10 RDS is a BUG Buun official, namely a kernel problem 2.6.31.

    How to resolve:

    1. type in the terminal pppoeconf ... give yes yes and when prompted type name and password from the provider.

    2. On / Off Net:

sudo pon dsl-provider connection to start
sudo poff dsl-provider to stop the connection.

    Good luck!

    • k1k1: For those who wish to net from ubuntu 9.10 RDS is a BUG Buun official, namely a kernel problem can be solved 2.6.31.Cum: 1. pppoeconf in terminal type ... give yes yes and when you type the name and password required to provider.2. On / Off Net: sudo pon dsl-provider connection to start
sudo poff dsl-provider to stop conexiunea.Bafta!

Your method is a solution but not for everyone, if you read the topic on the ubuntu.ro forum you would see that many posted that this method does not help them and that the net "falls" every 5-10 minutes and you always have to go to the terminal " sudo pon dsl-provider "to reactivate it. I don't know who wants to sit with their hands on the terminal only every 10 minutes for some every 10 minutes. It is best to be patient to fix this official bug, or to install the previous version 5 or another method would be to buy a rooter. I have a rooter and I made the settings for the RDS connection in the rooter and so I don't have any more hassle, I don't have to make any kind of setting. I have internet as soon as I finish installing Ubuntu without making any settings at all.

The BIOS is a BIOS just like the computer has no way to break down. It doesn't break down on the computer, so it can't work on the laptop either;)

  • k1k1 So I guess I can install operating systems with hundreds and not hurt? Adrian's true that it's sure to be an expert tells me. I would not say that others are incompetent, but I be safe!

I am not a specialist but I have a lot of experience in this field and more stupidity than that as "installing operating systems very often breaks the bios" I have never heard, now I hear for the first time. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The BIOS is the stand-alone BIOS has its own face and the operating system is the operating system. Install as many systems as you want and as many times as you want.

yes I know what it's like gotta be sure :)) =))

  • Adrian anyway thank you for the tutorials and I wait but I finally go to ubuntu after seeing all the tutorials on ubuntu you do, they do finish up chear all programs and settings that you can be doing other detailed comments that have merged problems with them and have to do a tutorial that is imp. I installed ubuntu windows: they are satisfied and error but I like to wait a little, well informed me understand?,, and I have a problem of ubuntu: I do not see tutorials on eldeloc and have flash player installed but instalatnustiu if java lam I think so and in some yutube can see them, others do not

This is due to your internet, in the evening ... or rather in the evening the networks are very busy, children come from school, people from work and start downloading movies, music, etc. and so the networks become very crowded, if they become crowded automatically your speed decreases and not only yours but everyone's. You will see that very late in the evening or in the morning the tutorials will work very well.
