How to partition correctly and how to install Ubuntu Linux in dual boot with Windows XP - tutorial video

A few days ago we present how to install Ubuntu Linux with Wubi without changing WinXP but I saw that many of you desire is to install it in dual bot, but this time for real and not through Wubi.
Here comes this day, partitioning and installing Ubuntu Linux is extremely simple, all you need to succeed in putting Ubuntu properly in dual boot with Windows is to be very careful with this tutorial. Ideally, for those of you who can afford it, to have 2 hard drives and to dedicate one of them entirely to Ubuntu. If you have 2 hard drives unplug the hard drive that you already have in Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, do not remove it from the drive but simply carefully pull the power plug and the connector that connects it to the motherboard, and leave it connected to the motherboard and source only the hardware you want to dedicate to the Ubuntu Linux operating system. You go and download an ISO image with Ubuntu from the official website of Ubuntu Romania http://www.ubuntu.ro make a bootable CD with that ISO image. If you don't know how to burn a bootable CD, my colleague Cristi showed in several tutorials with different burning software how you can do this. Write in the box "search on videotutorial.ro…" at the top right of the site: "CDBurnerXP" (free CD burning software) or "Nero" or "ImgBurn" (free CD burning software) or "how a bootable CD is made ”or only“ Bootable CD ”, press enter and you will find the tutorials.
Assuming that you have done all the above steps, all we have to do is insert the bootable CD containing an ISO image with Ubuntu Linux in the drive, we set in the BIOS for the system to boot the first time from the CD-ROM (only in if you have not already set this) or press the key for the quick boot menu (supported by only a few motherboards, for example on Gigabyte cards press the F12 key navigate with the arrows "up" - "down" CD-ROM press Enter and the system will boot from the CD)
If you do not have a quick boot menu and you do not know how to set the BIOS for your system to start booting from the CD for the first time, my colleague Cristi made a tutorial in which he explained the BIOS, including this. To find the tutorial we type in the box “search on videotutorial.ro…” located in the upper right: “some brief explanations about the BIOS” press Enter and you will find the tutorial.
Now that everything is ready the rest of the steps are simple and are presented in great detail in the video tutorial below. You can install Ubuntu Linux in dual boot with windows and without disconnecting the hard drive with windows but in time when you want to get rid of Linux you will have "problems" in the sense that the GRUB menu will "ride" the windows boot manager and even if you format the hard drive where Linux is installed, the Linux GRUB will remain on the primary partition on the Master hard drive (the hard drive on which Windows is located) and so when you want to enter windows it is very possible that you will not be able to boot into windows. If you don't have 2 hard drives, all you have to do is put Ubuntu Linux on the same hard drive with windows on another partition and you can't prevent GRUBU from running Linux on C (partition with windows) but if you have 2 hard drives you have this possibility to make the 2 operating systems not know each other and not have any problem by simply disconnecting the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Linux and then obviously after you have installed Ubuntu can reconnect the hard drive with Windows. Another mention on this method of installing ubuntu Linux on another hard drive and disconnecting the one with windows during installation is that when you want to enter Ubuntu you will have to enter the BIOS and Boot Prioriti to set from which hard to boot.

In conclusion: If you choose to install Ubuntu on the same hard but on another partition or another hard but without disconnect the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Ubuntu, you can switch between the operating systems 2 by a simple restart. And if you choose to install Ubuntu on another hard and disconnect the hard drive with Windows during the installation of Ubuntu, to access Ubuntu will always have to enter the BIOS and change the boot priorities between the 2 drives.

But let's look better together tutorial.

Remember, if you have suggestions, complaints or additions do not hesitate to write in the comments box, de-also if you met the comments box a user has a problem and you can help him, do not hesitate to do it, the only way we can do this place better, see the comments box!

Enjoy !

I would also like to know what Theme you use on XP Adrian… That black Theme.

    Thank you in advance

  3. I also suffered something like this, in the sense that all my partitions disappeared. Initially I set the ext 3 and swap partition, after which ubuntu seemed to start formatting what was to be formatted, but it gave me an error. After I restarted the computer I received the message "Disk boot failure". I inserted a live windows cd and after it loaded, I turned on my computer and noticed that I have no partition (except Ramdisk).
Finally, the live CD that also contained the "Recover My Files" ... I got lucky.
So a second HDD is required (or a stick 8GB +)

    • vali: And I happened something like that, meaning that I have gone all partitions. Initially I set 3 ext partition and swap, then ubuntu format seemed to start what was to be formatted, but gave me an error. After I restarted the computer I got the message "Disk boot failure". I put a live cd of windows and after he was charged, I stumbled on my computer and see that I do not have any partition (unless Ramdisk).

It's not mandatory but it's safer. As you saw in the tutorial I put Ubuntu on dual boot on the same partition on another hard where it was and windows, and after I finished installing Ubuntu nothing happened, I and windows and Ubuntu, just gotta be very careful when you partition! More than likely you select the partition which was C's and have Windows on it. If you pay attention to the instructions and you do not have to screw you!

As you can see I have had it out OK without damaging anything.

I got rid of that bug in the boot in another way (another one):
MyComputer (clickdreapta)-system properties-advanced-startup and recovery (settings)
and from there I selected "Edit" and reach that same page in notepad remove the line in question.

Yes it is, there are several ways, thank you for completing. No matter which way you go, I preferred to show my method so that those who do not know… on this occasion learned to make hidden folders visible, and thus learned that Windows actually hides many files. In the pc there is not only what can be seen !!!

  5. But it is not necessary to make a / boot partition? which have 32 64 or MB?

    • Cristi: But it is not necessary to make a / boot partition? which have 32 64 or MB?

It was done, look more closely at the tutorial or made 3 partitions one “/” Ext4 with logging then one “/ home” where the media files will stay etc also Ext4 with logging and the last “swap area” that will be used by the system in case that you will no longer have memory available. You don't have to "/ boot" because GRUBUL will go to the Master partition or hard drive anyway (in this case partition C where Windows is)

No need to partition / boot, since Grub is a boot that is installed in the master boot record MBR meaning that already exists on HD and is independent of other partitions.

  7. For those who wish to net from ubuntu 9.10 RDS is a BUG Buun official, namely a kernel problem 2.6.31.

    How to resolve:

    1. type in the terminal pppoeconf… give yes yes and when prompted enter the name and password of the provider.

    2. On / Off Net:

sudo pon dsl-provider connection to start
sudo poff dsl-provider to stop the connection.

    Good luck!

    • k1k1: For those who wish to net from ubuntu 9.10 RDS is a BUG Buun official, namely a kernel problem can be solved 2.6.31.Cum: 1. pppoeconf in terminal type ... give yes yes and when you type the name and password required to provider.2. On / Off Net: sudo pon dsl-provider connection to start
sudo poff dsl-provider to stop conexiunea.Bafta!

Your method is a solution but not for everyone, if you read the topic on the ubuntu.ro forum you would see that many posted that this method does not help them and that the net "falls" every 5-10 minutes and you always have to go to the terminal " sudo pon dsl-provider ”to reactivate it. I don't know who should sit with their hands on the terminal only every 10 minutes for some every 10 minutes. It is best to be patient to fix this official bug, or to install the previous version 5 or another method would be to buy a rooter. I have a rooter and I made the settings for the RDS connection in the rooter and so I don't have any more hassle, I don't have to make any kind of setting. I have internet as soon as I finish installing Ubuntu without making any settings at all.

I'm not a specialist but I have a lot of experience in this field and stupidity is bigger than that, as "installing operating systems very often breaks the bios" I have never heard, now I hear for the first time. THIS IS NOT TRUE. The BIOS is the stand-alone BIOS has its own face and the operating system is the operating system. Install as many systems as you want and as many times as you want.

This is due to your internet, in the evening… or rather in the evening the networks are very busy, children come from school, people from work and start uploading movies to download, music, etc. and so the networks become very crowded, if they become automatically crowded your speed decreases and not only yours but everyone's. You will see that very late in the evening or in the morning the tutorials will work very well.

  11. I installed and I ununtu with Wubi on the same partition with Windows XP. ie the C: partition
the problem is that I do not see the ubuntu windows folder. what for

Let me tell you where you went wrong
Both Windows and Linux Flash player is not installed on taking browser! You're wrong, you have installed flash player with Firefox open, and now you do not see videos with flash player but a plugin that comes with Firefox in Ubuntu. If you were listening to the previous tutorial where I showed how to install drivers and flash player, you saw that I downloaded Flash Player in. Deb closed my browser and then I installed flash player! That should be done on Windows and Linux Error or otherwise you will not be flash player plugin in the browser!

  13. very beautiful!
but the last time you chose Ady and password that you put tea 123 why not let them go into Ubuntu? you have the wrong password, or ...?

Yes I got the wrong password, instead of "123" I put "ady" then when I stopped the tutorial I realized that I had made a mistake… during the tutorial I did not realize. after I stopped the tutorial and put "123" it went.

    Hello ,
I installed Ubuntu on a separate hdd but it is in the other format ide drives (2) are SATA I Windows XP with NTFS format. The problem is that the computer read the first time and then the SATA IDE hard drive and the computer always starts with Ubuntu even if you save the BIOS to baptize the sata hard drive, save the settings and go not remember everything with ubuntu, and I want to go to Starting in windows without having to click F12 to force him to go with Windows.
When I turn on my computer I go into windows, all windows in the house and just know I want to work with ubuntu when I press F12.
    It would be a solution?
Thanks for Your effort, manage to learn what I could not find in any book.

    • Augustine costel: Turn on the computer when I want to go to windows, all windows in the house and only know when I want to work with ubuntu to press F12.

I had the same problem. I solved the problem by booting from the HDD with Ubuntu. In this case you will have a boot menu, from which you will have to choose Windows every time, I hope that the others in the house will be able to navigate with the arrows "up" and "down" inraiti: D).

    Hi Adrian,
I have a big request to you: I can't connect to the net from Ubuntu. I did exactly as in the tutorial and it doesn't want to connect in any way. I also tried wubi, and clean (installed), and with 9.04 and with 9.10 and still nothing. I downloaded the version 9.04 indicated by you. Some details about my net. I live at home and I have RDS, I have a device in the room that they call a modem (Motorola) that distributes signal to PC ptr.net and on the RDS landline phone. In the contract with RDS I don't have any password so when setting up the connection I don't know what to write on the fly. After searching for the connection it tells me "" never "

  19. Why can not I see this tutorial stops at min 10

  20. I 2 HDDs in the system from home. On the second HDD that I want to install Linux, I have two ntfs partitions. You should also format it to install, or is it only possible to format the first partition and install on it?

  21. Howdy.
    I have some problems:
    - I have a calc with 2 hdd (each hdd has 2 partitions) and until today I had on the first partition on hdd1 win vista, on the first partition on the second hdd win7.
    - I read the thing with 2 hdd and the selection of the one with which I boot from the bios (but I would have liked to have a menu with 3 options vista, 7 and ubuntu)
    - at the beginning I had a menu through which I could choose vista or 7
    - today I wanted to see how it is on ubuntu and I started installing it on the 2nd partition on hdd 2.
    - I thought that with groub I could choose between vista, 7 and ubuntu.
    - after I installed in groub I have a lot of options:
    - ubuntu 2.6 - generic
    - Ubuntu 2.6 generic (recovery mode)
    - Memory test (memtest 86 +)
    - Memory test (memtest 86 +, serial console)
    - win 7
    - My conclusion is that although I watched the tutorial twice I still did nonsense

    My questions are:
    - you can still remove that grub to have the vista and 7 menu again and try a ubuntu installation again,
    - why don't you find grub in the tutorial but only that menu with two options?

  22. another thing: why in my grub appears - ubuntu 2.6 - generic if I installed 9.10?

    • Lucian: Another thing: why in my grub appears - ubuntu 2.6 - generic if I installed 9.10?

Get forgotten once the tutorial to the end to see that and I still like my Apre!
It's normal to look like this, you have to choose when booting if you want to enter ubuntu, "ubuntu 2.6 - generic" the first option above. If you reinstall again you will have the same thing!

    • Lucian: Another thing: why in my grub appears - ubuntu 2.6 - generic if I installed 9.10?

GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) is a boot menu that will automatically create if you have multiple operating systems installed on the same computer, and gives you a choice between operating systems installed. GRUB will always be created by the latest operating system installed and its yours. Is a shell that loads the first time the computer is started and outdated user to choose between different operating systems (in case you have installed more than one) to boot.

You understood something? Otherwise I don't know how to explain it to you, go to computer class too…

  23. I admit that last part did not see it that stops me ttorialul (we did not take the part when installing packages)
But what if I was you appear in my vista and grub only 7 7. Vista does not appear?
    You can remove the grub
    - Ubuntu 2.6 generic (recovery mode)
    - Memory test (memtest 86 +)
    - Memory test (memtest 86 +, serial console)
and remain only win 7 (maybe I can make and vista)
What if you let me help, I just get into ubuntu or win.

I apologize if you made these clarifications in tutorial and I ask you again, but I honestly say I 4 days and we could not come to an end. I saw that someone said above that stops at 10 minutes.
If you can I raspuzi the questions above options in grub thank you if you did it in the tutorial I apologize and understand that you can not resume again printext tutorial.

I do not understand what business do you have with
      - Ubuntu 2.6 generic (recovery mode)
      - Memory test (memtest 86 +)
      - Memory test (memtest 86 +, serial console)
you have with them? Let there have their role, those you see once you reboot your PC or restart you.

2.6 ubuntu generic (recovery mode) = help you get into recovery mode in case you mess up Linux

Memory test (memtest 86 +) Memory test (memtest 86 +, serial console) = helps you make a memory test (it's RAM memory)

Windows does not know how to see EXT3 or 4 or 2 (proprietary Linux partitions) but it will show you the Linux hard drive if you right click when you are in Windows on My Computer then Manage then on Storage. But Linux knows how to see NTFS or FAT, from Linux you should be able to see the hdd with Windows, you can mount them, you should find the Windows hard drive called Filesystem either in Places under Computer, or click on Computer (equivalent to My Computer from Windows) and there it will show you all the hdds, you mount it by double clicking, it will ask you for the authentication password (ie the login password on Linux) you give ok and voila, the partition will open…

  31. might be a stupid question: is it possible that ubuntu installed with Wubi srice video card? Depending on the answer will give some details

    • ionutz: Might be a stupid question: is it possible that ubuntu installed with Wubi srice video card? Depending on the answer will give some details

We ask that you read and so do not repeat

I've never encountered your situation, and I don't think it's possible for an operating system to break your component. It's probably pure coincidence that he gave you the board exactly when you were making those changes, who knows, maybe you have a weak source… I have no idea

  32. forget and details:

before installing ubuntu on clean (as said above), I installed windows on another partition using Wubi. After the installation is complete, restart went normal, I selected to boot ubuntu and when to open my error appears out of range.

After that I installed on another hdd Linuxu (as mentioned on December 31 2009 to 12: 55).
then began to behave strangely video card, he gave a couple of times out of range and when finally booted (either Linux or Windows) boot image is seen with some vertical black streaks. the system fails to enter that keeps restarts.

I removed the video card from the PC and I connected to the monitor through the motherboard. It boots normally, it enters the system (in both) only that the resolution is about… ..not to mention games or hd movies (which don't work) .

I will repeat the question: it is possible that because of ubuntu it will make the video card like this. maybe it works at too high a resolution, high frequency… .. I don't know, that's beyond me

    any advice is welcome.

Nothing, Windows knows to see Linux partitions are different format! But as you said the opposite may, Linux knows to see any form of partition even on the Windows

  36. I also have a problem, if you can help me, I installed ubuntu when I had an older monitor, it worked, but when I change the monitor with an LCD with a resolution of 1440 × 900 it doesn't work, the black screen appears instead on another monitor it works .If you can help me, tell me and I will ask you how to make it work on the LCD.

I tried to partition in linux with some tools and although it seemed identical to the DVR did not recognize the format. what can I do or do not know?

Yes even if you install Linux just partitioning method is the same, if you change your mind you can always do it again NTFS partitions WinXP and you can call anytime. Did I mention all this in the tutorial, watch it to the end without rewind!

    Hello ,

I also have a question… actually more 🙂 but up to the questions, a few details. I took ubuntu 10..I gave up win7..on an external hdd I saved some stuff. Now the problem is that I installed ubuntu on the entire hdd of the laptop. That is 250gb..of linux 🙂
Question: I can now partition (as going to win)? Or you need to format and start over to make partitions and from the beginning?

    Thank you very much.

PS .. I love this site and keep up the good work :)

No need to format to create new partitions or modify partitions, install GParted from "Ubuntu Software Center" or "Synaptic Package Manager"

It's the monitor, it's most likely junk CRT sfatiesc you to take the unit to your home and to install Ubuntu on your monitor hooked up or if he has another monitor, after installation, everything will be OK, I will accept and will show how even with his monitor. One installation for another monitor ... you need a better known brand or use the installation cd: alternate CD, installation will be in text mode (I hope you're doing) but ubuntu dpa will be a normal installation.

Unfortunately it is not from the monitor (23 ”PHILIPS TFT 231T1SB / 00) He practically gave on the unit about 400-450 lei out of 1600 how much did the pc cost him. Can it be from the video card?
        * Intel or AMD CPU Mhz 1200
        * 512 RAM
        * Disk space 8GB
        * A video card with acceleration 3D
Requirements on site.Am best to try the proposed solution with other monitors do not know Cuz I got a text mode installation, but I think something explode ko dak incerc.Revin later or tomorrow detalii.Mc nice.

I didn't find out why he didn't want it on the board but it doesn't matter now, for me. My answer will probably not help anyone, but I wanted you to know that I solved it. Thank you very much for your help.

  48. Hello, I installed Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and I have two problems, if you could help me.

    1. When my laptop boots and I select the option appears 7 between ubuntu and windows on my ubuntu appear earlier versions, and I'd like to just defend my version of the operating system.
    2. During installation, a friend told me that there would be no need to do my swap and considering that 2 GB DDR3, 1066 MHz, and said that swap will not use so much swap . I did well?

Please kindly help me to point 1, 2 versions but now I just think they will be coming versions.

    Thanks in advance,
    George

After I managed to turn the comp we found that the partition D which was a 80 gb I only 70. Basically 10 gb of hdd disappeared. I do not see in windows or Ubuntu. I wanted to reformat everything and reinstall Windows from 0 and only there to see the partition menu, but I can not change the shape, I can not touch it. Can you help me get it back?? Thanks

Amazing what you do, I learned a lot from you Adriane and Cristi ..
One thing is annoying - present the tutorials a little faster, so that those who are more or less good at PCs get bored of listening for 1 hour. And those who are not good at all, can take breaks-back-play where they want, to resume if they lost an idea ..
    Thanks, you're good ..

  57. Now I understand that if I 7 windows C: partition and Ubuntu partition F should not be two hard drives, you just set, ie to have a possibly empty partition example for beginners, but I wonder where they can do the job here Virtualbox he create another virtual space without occupying space outside of the folder created for virtualbox? Sorry I have too many questions!

    • Virtual Box can not virtualize space I know of. If you install an OS on virtual box and the setup of virtualbox 40 GB assign him will only use this if you install it on a partition in which you say 100 GB free space and choose the setting with dynamic or so something he will take what it needs and that you fill as virtual OS programs with virtualbox partition space is filled and finally will tell you that you have no space. Repeat virtualbox can not virtualize space. Virtual operating system programs occupy real space. At least that I know of. If you have any queries do not hesitate to ask it and freshen the videotutorial.ro :))
