- we can provide by email the link to a movie we uploaded to Google Drive
- we can install applications from the Chrome Web Store to use in Google Drive. If we want to do more complex tasks with existing files in Google Drive, we install applications and we can work with files in the cloud without using computer software. Basically we have at our fingertips a whole extremely flexible platform that allows advanced work with files without us having a high processing power on the computer from which we will do this. Everything happens in the cloud, online.
- we can decide if and who can see our files, who can edit them, who can download them
- we can go back in time (30 days ago) for edited documents so we can see the document in all its stages of editing, basically Google Drive can save multiple versions of the same document. We also have the possibility to decide which version of the document to be final.
- we can restore deleted files and documents. When we delete a file, folder or document, they are moved to the "Trash". From there, we can permanently delete or restore them.
What impressed me a lot about this service is the very advanced search. Imagine you have thousands of photos in your account. Finding a photo would be an ordeal. Well, simply type in the search box in Google Drive the name of the object, place or subject that contains the photo you want and Google Drive will find it. For example, we remember that we have a picture in which we photographed a tiger, we write in the search box the word "tiger", we press enter and voila! It will be found immediately even if the word tiger is not in its name.
Still another example for PDF documents, DOCX etc. It is necessary to remember only a word we know that it contains the document you are looking for us, we write in the search box and bummm, Google Drive will display all documents that contain the word we specify them in the search box even if the name is not in word documents sought by us.
how is that possible Google Drive uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology. Basically, when looking for a photo or a document, Google Drive not only looks at the name of the files but also in the content of these files, thus offering a relevant result.
What we would have liked to see in Google Drive?
- even if you install the Google Drive desktop client, it will not integrate with the context menu in the operating system. I would have really liked when I right-click on a file, wherever we are in Windows Explorer, to see the "send to Google Drive" option.
- also related to the integration in the context menu, I would have liked to see on the right click on a file from the Google Drive folder on the PC, the option "Get public link" or "Get public link"
- right click on the Google Drive indicator in System Tray I would have liked to see the file upload speed.
- in the web interface of the service, I would have liked the possibility to play audio files, without the need to install a chrome Web Store application for Google Drive. Videos can be played but not audio files.
- the process of obtaining a public link for sharing a file to a friend so that he can download it with or without a Google account (.rar, .mp3, .iso, .exe) seems very confusing and cumbersome for non-technical users
- I would have liked the Google Drive desktop client to be able to set a limit for the speed of uploading and downloading files, as is the case with the Dropbox desktop client.
- I tested the file upload speed a bit and it seems that Dropbox syncs / uploads files faster.
From my point of view Google Drive is an incredible service, more than a simple file storage space is a very flexible platform that certainly will gain new capabilities in near future. For me, Google Drive is a storage service and synchronizing files but a SUITE CLOUD. It will soon become a place where you can do anything with your files and documents using only a browser without software installed on your computer that you know how to work with existing files in account
