Introduction to the terminal 3, using su, archive, unzip, tab completition, adding ppa

Hello friends, in today's tutorial we will learn together how to use your command, how to archive or how to unzip using the Terminal or the graphical interface and how to add new sources / ppas from the terminal or using a graphical interface. In order to better understand the ones presented here, I recommend you to watch the other 2 tutorials, respectively "introduction to the terminal 1"Where we talked about creating, moving, modifying, navigating folders using the terminal and"introduction to the terminal 2”Where we talked about installing, uninstalling software using the terminal, updating and upgrading the software in the interface or using the terminal. As in the other tutorials, the use of the terminal is optional, but often by calling the terminal we make our work a lot easier and save valuable time. If you are wondering what a PPA is, well here is the answer.
PPA or Personal Package Archive is a "repository" of software, packages, libraries or dependencies where the Ubuntu GNU / Linux operating system authenticates and downloads the necessary packages for the software we want to install. It can happen as I explained in the tutorial about "three methods of installing software on Ubuntu”As a software development community / team, to create an application that is not in the official repositories of the Ubuntu operating system and so to install the applications of third parties software developers we have to add the PPA to have access to the repository where they keep the packages and files needed to install the application. However, I would like to point out that not all software developers offer a PPA. Some offer ready-made .deb packages that you simply download and install with a double click, others also offer .deb and PPA packages, and others only offer a source, a tar.bz2 archive with the source code of the application you will need to we compile it manually to get executable code. But we will talk about compiling a software in the following tutorials. That being said, I invite you to watch this video tutorial together.
Remember, if you have suggestions, complaints or additions do not hesitate to write in the comments box, de-also if you met the comments box a user has a problem and you can help him, do not hesitate to do it, the only way we can do this place better, see the comments box!
Enjoy !

  • First, as I said ... exceptional: D On this occasion many Windows users will switch to Linux;) Congratulations Adrian!

  • I installed Ubuntu and I 10.4. I mean, music and movies sound and will be irregular. Mention that all updates are up to date including the driver. I installed audiacious music and movies for vlc player. As a principal I 7 with Windows OEM license. On Windows everything works normally.

I want to say from the start that I really appreciate what you do promoting Linux. Although we license Windows 7 I wanted to test Ubuntu to run on computer future we plan to make it personal in "pieces". It does not seem normal that the PC I have now run movies and music with interruptions as long as has the following configuration: Processor: QuadCore Phenom Athlon X4 9550, Motherboard: Asus M2N-E Video Card: You Radeon HD 4770, DDR2: 4GB and the source is SIRTEC of 600W. On Windows 7 are up to date with all drivers including bios (although the motherboard is older model). I did direct video encoders video card without stressing the CPU. I wish I had Ubuntu on the same system as in WIN7 stable. I do not care brizbrizuri. I just want to see and hear from him smoothly and without crashes (so far on Ubuntu 10.4 3 I was already blocked times) and surf the net without any problems. I want a simple and functional operating system. Although they say that there are viruses on Linux, and I would like some advice for antivirus. Anyway thank you for the advice and hope you manage to make your PC work as well as in Windows 7. Speaking Office.org part seems over Microsoft Office.

Try to give more details of how often interruptions, the player use, discontinue and youtube for example? ..
I use Audaciuous as I said, and there are several options in settings audio.ALSA driver (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) is a stable driver which I use, but again came up with pulse-audio, we understood that always made trouble .. so looking and set the ALSA audio driver or try more you may go to another depends largely on what type of sound card built in MB ..

The video is the same thing, there are plenty of drivers in VLC / smplayer xv but they recommend you to try them all to see which is better for the system tau.Cu some of them will not work at all, for they are for other configurations.

As for OpenOffice, it's ok when it's used somewhere where it uses only OO, compatibility with MS but not very buna.Am had some tables made in MS and OO opened them but they were turned upside down .. no use .. It's ok, in an institution / company where everyone is OO but problems arise when they send documents to others, or receive documents made in MS

I also had a similar problem partially. Every time you watch a movie in full screen, the CPU load greatly, and the image tends to be jerky, interrupted here and there (just picture).
The problem was solved by disabling the visual effects. (Right click --- change desktop background - visual effects ---- no visual effects).
In ubuntu 9.04 not have that problem.

It remains to be seen whether this advice will help you or not ... It all depends on the configuration of your computer and its compatibility with ubuntu 10.04.

  • I think the best was when the series of tutorials were centered on the daily needs of users, we assume that the system is installed and funtional ..
The CLI is necessary, but might hope.
Specifically, after the part with the installation should have followed "How to listen to music in Linux" .. and presented the programs and settings to see the man as "possible" .. after which "How to see Movies / pictures..we write CD / DVD- ", using default programs or installing new ones. Such as Audacious which does not come pre-installed but exists in repo.
So, even after the person sees that most of the things he does in Win can be done in Linux, including installing games with Play-on Linux, you can move on to less interesting things like the console ...

On the contrary, for the future we will need PPPs, often the third-party software that is not in the repository is better connected than the ones that come in the system, so what would the user have said when we started and said: "Like to install this player we put this ppa "? I'm not going to lie and delude anyone, I always said Linux is not Windows, here things are completely different, Linux is not for everyone, it is not for the stinky who are not going to read 2-3 documentation pages, it's not for those who are waiting for the blackberry in the mouth, it's not for those who are waiting for the problems to be solved by themselves!

To learn something first you need to know the basics to understand how things work, how that thing is built, what the weaknesses are and what the strengths are. There will also be tutorials about the interface but first you have to know the basics, why sit and explain someone on the road, why sit carefully ... "aoleu ... I can't do a tutorial about that thing because users don't I know what sudo is? " why not make them and when there are doubts to send them here? At school you don't learn poetry until you learn to write, you don't learn to draw until you learn colors

      • Adrian:
Yes, it is the opposite, for the future we need ppa sites often third software that is not in the repository are better connected than those who come into the system, so that said user would begin and said: "As to install this player tuck this ppa "? I'm not going to lie and anyone deluded, I always say Linux is not Windows, where things are quite different, Linux is not for everyone, not for the lazy who do not plan to read 2-3 pages of documentation, not for the walls in your mouth waiting, not for those who expect to solve problems by themselves? like to learn something first must know the basis to understand how things work, in what way is built that thing, what are the weaknesses and the strengths. There will be tutorials on interface but first need to know basis, why stand to enlighten anyone on the way, why are carefully ... "oh boy ... I can not do tutorial about that one thing that users do not know what That sudo "? Why not be done when questions occur to send him here? The school did not learn until you learn to write poems, draw until you learn to learn colors

Your reasoning is logical, however when working with human psyche is not always like this potriveste.Probabil stand salesmanship someone to do something or to accept something that is not fully convinced .. Before I show the advantages and the beautiful, to convince the then confront the less pleasant side of things ..
Specifically, you can not say that after a fresh install you need to apt-get or PPA, because you contradict yourself .. The system comes with everything you need for use, and only if you fuss / favorites, you need to install Other programs ..
So to do a demonstration with Linux capabilities, and only after a man throw it in a user consolei.Practic problems that satisfied with default programs does not need all of the console.
Simply put, go back in time and think about what attracted you to linux in the beginning, and what determined you to persevere ... console and console commands or 3D graphics possibilities, what you didn't see in windows and immunity the virus.?
For example, after ~ 7 years of using linux, I don't find the idea of watching movies ordering in the mplayer console at all attractive ...., that's why I use smplayer to look good ... if it can have an advanced interface and at the same time the functionality is perfect, why be satisfied with a washed interface? By the way, the new KDE 4.5.1 with transparency and blur, more recently has transparent menus thanks to oxygen-transparent looks bestial.

Ok, and instead of saying in a tutorial that "click here after there ..." compared to the line in the console ... you can also say "create a directory in which we copy the file ... on which occasion the man also understands what is actually happening..However, who doesn't even know these trivial commands has nothing to do with linux, much less in console-related operations
        ...
But unfortunately, everywhere, there are guys who claim that linux is mostly console commands, and that they use at most fluxbox or you wonder what DE, after which we wonder why the world does not have a better opinion about linux. ..

We talked about the advantages and disadvantages twice in 2 tutorials: "The best and friendliest Linux, Ubuntu overview" and "Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 2 LTS officially available for download, installation and presentation" Who has not seen them, let them will give. I did not claim that Linux is just commands! On the contrary, I explained 10.04 times in all 3 tutorials about getting into the terminal why others recommend the terminal, and why it is so often used. It saves valuable time, and you do things faster but it is not necessary to use it.

In the tutorial "The best and friendliest Linux, Ubuntu overview" in the text above the tutorial I wrote a real novel about Ubuntu Linux, has anyone read it, does anyone read it?

Congratulations Adrian for the tutorials with Terminal 'I watched all 3 carefully, I hope you make me learn new commands :)) I'm new to Linux and I like working with the terminal more than with the interface, it's more special to type in the terminal than to give next, next:)) ... thank you very much for what you do for us.

I would suggest you do not load your sources.list with repo that you do not need ..
When you need a program - say JDOWNLOADER - go to their site looking for downloads for ubuntu, and presents your repository for it where you can choose the version of ubuntu. You can copy the two lines with ctrl-c then open as root a text editor (I use kwrite) open sources.list and paste the lines ctrl-v. After that sudo apt-get update, and sudo apt-get install, or you can use synaptic / any package manager for update / install.
I consider aptitude to be the best package manager, it offers you many options in case of conflicts, and most importantly, in case you install a package with a lot of dependencies, when uninstalling it also deletes your dependencies, which does not happen. in synaptic. The downside is that it is quite difficult to understand and work with ...

The run utility is a kind of console from which you can quickly launch programs provided you know their exact names. I don't know exactly what it's like in Gnome, but in KDE with alt + f2 the RUN utility starts programs, can do calculations, store and suggests the names of previous commands, and many many other things that I did not even use .. has a button that takes you directly to the task manager where you can "kill" processes that have crashed, anyway in principle not there is a "list of commands". In the console instead, if you press Tab twice, it asks you if you want to show all your commands..over 2000 ... At any command you can write man command .. and the manual opens of the respective command..or is the --help command variant, similar to the DOS command, the /?

  • Super three episodes dedicated terminal in ubuntu linux. Congratulations Adrian, I am overjoyed that you have returned and videotutoriale on Ubuntu linux, I hope (and I'm not the only one) that will continue. Videotutorialele your comments seem ubuntu linux most explicit. Maybe you do and a tutorial on samba file share (the share between ubunu-ubuntu, and how we can share between ubuntu-windows and vice versa) would be interesting, to me I would be interested. THANK ff.mult for everything you do for us.

  • hello sir Adrian :) I am a beginner I have been using Ubuntu for almost a year and I am fff satisfied with it :) I am very glad that you thought to pay attention to this operating system. Thanks to you I learned something new about this incredible system :) I ask you to continue your work in this field and I don't pay attention to those who reproach you with the best windows thing. My opinion is that everyone should work and do their job what they like. to continue to elucidate many of the mysteries hidden by Linux that some of us k me are grateful to you others with bad intentions I wish you harm but you through the good you do to us God will give you ten in life. I wish you all good sir Adrian and on my part you have RESPECT. Hello !!!

  • Series of tutorials on the terminal is good, congratulations Adrian, expect these tutorials on software inmstalarea archived in various formats.

  • We welcome

Very good these tutorials and I want to congratulate you for your hard work and encourage you to continue the series of tutorials in Linux Ubuntu.
One question I have and can find a solution:
    - What do we do with the transfer of files from Pidgin on the Yahoo Messenger protocol because it doesn't want at all? I have the latest version of pidgin and it doesn't work at all to receive or send files using the Yahoo protocol.
    Thank you in advance.

      Thank you in advance.

Yahoo transfer does not work at all, I use for small and fast transfer Skype which has a native client for linux. We have so many tutorials about file sharing methods ... you could also use unite opera which also has a native version for linux, about united opera we have tutorial, write up in the search box on the right on the black margin: opera unite, dai enter and you will find the tutorial. Again you can use the dropbox about which we also have a tutorial and which also has a native client for linux and many other possibilities.

It's not Pidgin's fault, it's Yahoo's fault because they don't make the protocol used public. The goal is to force users to use only their IM client, and to confuse the rains of third-party IM clients. on the throat the ads that no one wants, and forces you to use the flash player (it has no other role than to run the ads ...) which consumes your memory and processor unnecessarily ... That's about the monopoly policy. .
Of course there are plenty of alternatives to YM, but the vast majority just heard about it, and squint when they hear that in order to send / receive files, instead of dragging the file with the mouse, they have to install Skype, to do account or enter on I do not know what links .. And the truth is that things instead of being simple, become complicated .. just because we are stubborn to use something other than the rest of the bumblebee ..... the same goes for audio / video in YM. I would put this reason on a leading place (two, after games) in a TOP 5 reasons why the world avoids linux ...
There would also be the option to use the Jabber protocol, which is free, but who has an account there from my acquaintances ?: P
And I read somewhere that would work if you change the server and port that is .. send file to Yahoo Account Settings in Pidgin.

Now maybe I should get some of you do not googled .. :) .. kidding, do not worry ..
Anyway, I think that besides the change of protocol by Yahoo, the fault for the bad progress of the transfers would also be the fact that Pidgin supports so many protocols ... and wanting to make them all functional there are also leaks. Then probably in the native countries. of the devs, AIM and MSN are used, less Yahoo, and we can also take into account the sometimes absurd indolence of some. It is notorious the answer of a dev from Pidgin, regarding the Webcam and voice support ... that according to him, why would anyone need something like that ... so there are some of them ... And whoever wants something only has to implement the respective functions..as, it's open source ..

You saw I said "I read somewhere", because that's all it was, I didn't try to see if it works so I didn't want to say more than I knew ..
I can still tell you that at work I put Pidgin on XP and sometimes it goes to receive and send. To send you must click on send file, drop & down does not work, and I experienced that if the files have certain extensions do not send them / receive, but the same file with changed extension, works. I tried this with jpg and exe, I rarely did them or txt and it worked.
Anyway, you realize that few people are happy when they want to send you a picture and after the first attempt, obviously failed, I say "change the extension" or "archive it" and finally "open skype". .That's why I say that if this problem were solved in addition to the games, the bottom of Micro $ oft should tremble ...

thanks for the links, how about KDE. He doesn't give me and never turns his back on me. I just did the print screens on the gnome-look regarding transparency. I have Kubuntu with KDE 4.5.1 on virtual and it's how I know it ... buggi, crash, nothing new ... on the contrary ... an annoying thing, that thin glossy outline that appears when you hold the mouse over a button it seems to me the most gypsy and tasteless effect. finally they gave them through the brain to put mono icons in the "tray" next to the watch ... until now they were of all colors. I don't know, but when I sit on this KDE, it gives me the feeling that I'm using an operating system for young ladies, for women, probably the girls from bamby would love the gypsy and full of glossy KDE. Maybe I'm too mean, but that's my opinion. I don't understand these people, make him a stable brother on any system, stiffen him well, make him connect perfectly with the kernel and the rest of the operating system and then try to make him impotent. Let's look at Gnome, what does it look like, and what does it look like now? only now are they going to look good, and they did very well, they tied it perfectly with the system, they strengthened it, and now they are struggling with the Gnome Shell. While KDE strikes the coin nonsense and meaningless instead of perfecting its stability

Thanks for the links, how about KDE. Yes and no I do not never gave me back. I was actually seeing sites just print screen on gnome-look on transparency. Kubuntu with KDE virtual 4.5.1 got it and it's how I know ... Bugge, crash, nothing new ... on the contrary ... something annoying outline that appears when you're thin glosy mouse button seems the gypsy effect and tasteless. finally gave them and put them through creierasul mono icons in "tray" near the clock ... until now were of all colors. I do not know but it's KDE when sitting on it gives me the feeling that using an operating system for ladies, women, girls at bamby probably would love KDE's full glosy Gypsies. Maybe I'm too nasty but that's my opinion. I do not understand these nation, brother against him firmly on any system, intepenestel good, do it to bind perfectly with the rest of the operating system kernel and then sought to impopotenezi. Let's look at Gnome What kind look, and what looks now? only now they're going to walk to the point, and very well made, they lgat perfect the system, they hardened, and now struggle with gnome shell. While KDE coin look stupid and senseless Replace to improve its stability

I can make the story long, but I will make it short. I don't like gnomes and that's it, I don't give details anymore ... and in terms of stability, I work perfectly, and I really like it to be a little different from other DEs. Can you imagine that if I had problems I wouldn't keep it and move on to another DE. Anyway, I tried other distros in the idea that they will "know" more than * buntu ... and in the end I found out that they are all the same marie but each with its hat .... slightly customized or with other tools specific to the distribution, but the capabilities remain the same. And, most importantly the preferences are not discussed. I don't care about a gnome / kde user or another DE, it's important to be linux and derived from Debian. And here are voices that claim that package management is better at rpm than at deb .. We respect everyone's option and eventually try to learn from each other from experience or mistakes.
Honestly, I think that we as simple users who have not contributed to any open source project with not even a line of code ... we have no right to give our opinion about the work that others do voluntarily, even more so a little to raise claims, or to make classifications. It is enough and correct to expose your point of view "I / I don't like", and if something really doesn't work, the bug is related to the developers.

From .deb vs .rpm, I also heard that ubuntu (debian in general) has the largest package store, so ... For example, I like in Fedora that History that yum has. If you installed something and with that "something" there are addictions and bookstores, you give a history and with a single command you got rid of the software and why it came next to it. While in Ubuntu you have to give:
sudo apt-get remove --purge numesoft or sudo apt-get purge numesoft
And if it has arrived with something you absolutely must order:
            sudo apt-get autoremove

If you install something with that "something" coming outbuildings and bookstores, give a history and by one order of escape and soft and he never came near him. While, in Ubuntu you need to give:
sudo apt-get remove-purge numesoft or sudo apt-get purge numesoft
And if it has arrived with something you absolutely must order:

It is true that * buntu / debian has the most comprehensive software repository, but there were also cases when I did not find a deb package, I only found rpm and it had to be converted to .deb with alien ..
For history, it is enough to install with aptitude, and when uninstalling it also deletes the dependencies with which the installed package came. Or, it also works from Synaptic, here it is a bit harder, install package with dependencies, when uninstalling go to history, look for the displayed packages there and select them for uninstallation. There is also a deborphan program, which looks for packages that are not required by any application and deletes them ... but it can also be wrong ..: D. Anyway, it is heard that aptitude will be taken out of the official repo * buntu, but in my opinion it is the best in package management, only it is quite difficult to work with it ...

As for the KDE crash..even here in this topic, someone was complaining that Gnome crashed 3 times so far..10.04 the "stable" version ..
If you review my posts, somewhere I wrote that I actually use a few KDE applications. Specifically they would be Dolphin, Gwenview, Kolorpaint, Kwrite, K3B, konsole. The start menu is moved to classic, not their new kickoff, the panel does not exist, I use cairo-dock with mac-osx theme ... Audacious audio player, VLC / SMplayer video, Opera / Chrome browser (because it translates automatically ..) IM, Pidgin ...
In conclusion, no I would not know if other applications have problems ..
Do not use Kopete, because while now does not even display the pictures in buddy list .. what to transfer vb or video .. do not use KPim, kwallet, Nepomuk, Kmail this .. so I would not know if I go or not .. just what I read about them on the net ..
So for me as a user, from what I use and how I use it, it's super ok ..
However, after seeing what you suffered, I opened Kopete and logged in without any problems and it even displays the pictures in the list..wow..I currently have 10.04 and KDE 4.5.1, Opera is at 10.70 beta .. and in most cases I have it was all in beta / alpha, so for kubuntu in alpha / beta and Kde idem..who should be surprised if something falls from time to time ...
It's still an annoying thing in Kde, I don't know if it will be better on Gnome, respectively if the battery is completely discharged from the laptop and it shuts down, when I restart I don't have a network at all..I have to delete some files..I also tried with " resume to HDD "instead of RAM, it doesn't work at all..except with" do nothing ". On a normal desktop PC like this it doesn't affect you in any way ..This bug is perpetuated by some good editions in Kde..but I found the solution and it doesn't bother me anymore ...
