How to connect USB devices in VirtualBox when the real system is Ubuntu Linux - video tutorial

Hi friends, in today's tutorial you'll learn how to use USB devices in VirtualBox if the real system is Ubuntu Linux and Windows at the VirtualBox is, be it XP, Vista or Ubuntu Linux 7 or all.
We've done a tutorial in the past about using USB devices in VirtualBox but then the real system was Windows. If on Windows things were simpler and using USB devices in VirtualBox only requires the installation of an Extension Pack for it as well as the installation of Guest Additions in the virtual operating system, on Ubuntu things change a little. Besides the fact that it will be necessary to install Extension Pack and Guest Additions in the system from VirtualBox, we also have to do something in the real system (Ubuntu Linux). Specifically, we will need to add the Ubuntu user to the "vboxuser" group.
CAREFUL: After adding the username in the "vboxuser" group we will have to restart the real system. It is recommended that you do not start VirtualBox and do not run the virtual system when adding the username to the "vboxuser" group.
Once you have done these steps, we can enjoy USB devices and operating system in VirtualBox even if the real system is Ubuntu Linux. As I said in the tutorial for Windows, USB devices connected to the virtual system can not be folosoite and real system at the same time. You have to disconnect the USB device from the virtual system so it can be used in the real system. That said, I invite you to watch the video tutorial to see exactly what to do to use USB devices in virtual system when the real system is Ubuntu Linux.

The restart is more "holy", I don't miss the train ... I have no reason to hurry. This is why many of you encounter mistakes and one will not work. you don't know how to be patient, you often skip small and important steps believing that they are useless

  • I installed now (November 15, 2011), Virtualbox on the host OS Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. It now comes (default) with Virtualbox version.4.1.2 and not with version.4.0.2. Please let me know if anyone knows where I can download Guest Addition 4.1.2. iso? Thank you all in advance. I'm waiting for an answer if I don't ask too much, at matcastl@yahoo.co.uk.

  • Hi Adrian, please tell me in the version of ubuntu 12.04 where I find the one with users and groups to check vboxusers and I can't find it.

  • I have the same question; please tell me in ubuntu version 12.04 where i find "users and groups" to check vboxusers. Thanks a lot!

  • First I appreciate the kindness and effort of Adrian, materialized in this tutorial.

From Synaptic System Manager is installed gnome-system-tools and system-tools-backends.
In DashHome, you search by user, and it's not hard to find "Users and groups".
The rest is found in the tutorial.
