How to connect an external microphone to the phone or tablet

Hi friends, today we will see how you can connect an external microphone to your tablet or phone.
Finally you will see that the difference between internal and one external microphone.
Something about sound recording…
To make a capture audio quality, we need a good microphone placed close to the sound source. Even though we have the most powerful microphone in the world is worthless if it is too far from the sound source.
When you place the microphone close to the source, we obtain a very good SNR, SNR stands for signal to noise ratio, ie the ratio of signal and noise. Understand this well if you try to talk to someone on the phone in a noisy environment, at the opposite end will surely complain about the sound quality.
In addition to SNR, we are interested in the effect of this, got hurt when the microphone is placed near the source. The effect of this depends on the microphone, but in general we emphasize more voice.
Why not use the internal microphone?
The internal microphone is exactly where it would have to be. Normally the room must not have microphone, unless they are isolated by a shock absorption system (shock mount).

If the microphone is on the camera, it is obvious that will capture the vibrations, noise font or anything in place to record what interests us, that voice.
The built-in microphone can only be used for quick, unimportant filming or for capturing ambient sound. Also the internal microphone can be used for the subsequent synchronization of video and audio tracks, if we used an external audio recorder.
As we can connect the microphone to the phone or tablet, we need a special adapter, which you find in stores or ebay or amazon.

  • An interesting tutorial for the most enthusiastic :)
Can you tell me, please, how I can use my phone, tablet as a microphone on my laptop (or link to the tutorial if it already exists (If there is already a tutorial on your site, it means that I didn't know how to search: D) ). I tried a few methods, but they were not satisfactory ... there was a grunt / squeak (I don't know how to describe more clearly) what is true is that it was not a clear, clean sound ... there was interference like when you put two phones on the call next to each other (microphone I think it's called the phenomenon).
    Thanks and good luck!

    • A simple desktop microphone is quite cheap, I do not think it's worth bother.
Now I do not know what you want to do, I suppose you want to do a desktop capture with sound. You can record audio in phone / tablet, then synchronize video with audio.

  • I salute you, I want to know if a record for using an application can use the microphone from headphones? Or we need another external microphone? The microphone jack adapter needs or go without?

    • If you have headphones microphone jack probably trrs (four-pole). This means that it works without adapter.

  • Thanks for the tutorial. Very useful! The link is on amazon.co.uk not on ebay but it's good that I have an amazon account. The cable on amazon looks different from the cable on your cable (there is also an adapter on amazon for the same product with a more expensive pound sterling that has a microphone drawn on it). Are yours more expensive than the ones on amazon? I'm interested in something quality. What price are Sennheiser headphones and where can they be bought?

      • I think if you talk about those headphones and earphones on generally a good idea, professional sound monitors, speakers for studio monitoring, audio supply facilities 2.0, 2.1 etc., as a suggestion of course, need to hear in a sound and quality of the microphone, music etc.

  • Very interesting videotutorialul I recommend headphones with mic sennheiser pc 151 that I was impressed by the sound quality I bought 2 + microphone pairs

  • Hi there!
For those interested in such a cable (like me) you can buy it on http://www.aliexpress.com/item/3-5mm-4-Pin-to-2x-3-Pin-3-5mm-Headset-Splitter-Adapter-M-F/1981658078.html
I do not know if it's exactly the same company that produced it, but apparently do the job.
I need it for the laptop, I have an Acer Aspire E5-571G audio jack that has a mother with 4 3.5 pins.
Phone headsets work well (a headset from LG and another from Allview) but I want to put gaming headphones, and thanks to this tutorial I found what I needed splitter type.
I saw splitter on Amazon (link placed by you) but not obijnuit to order from Amazon, I ordered prefer AliExpress because there many electronic (microcontrolare kits) and I had no problem.
By mail, reach fixed 3 weeks for those interested in buying there.
    All the best!

  • Hello Cristi
I'm an old visitor to this site and thank you for all videotutorialele taken from you I learned many useful things,
I like when you have time to do a tutorial on virtual stereo mix, not simple stereo mix or activation function in comp.
Many users have stereo mix function,
    Thank you for understanding.
