Why the pictures with the light in front come out dark - SOLUTION

Why the pictures with the light in front come out dark - SOLUTION
Surely you've hit this problem: take a picture of the sun or light bulb in front and your subject comes out very dark. Although the cameras are quite advanced, it seems they are not so smart to be able to see what we want them to do.

Why do dark pictures go out with light in front?

The cameras have a self-exposing system that measures light from a certain portion of the frame and makes an arithmetic mean. This results in an average value that adjusts the exposure of the frame.
When we have a strong light in the back, the phone's sensor makes the measurement taking into account the strong light, resulting in a much darker exposure.

Types of exposure measurement:

1. Matrix = light measurement with an average arithmetic across the frame (used for landscapes)
2. Center = Measurement of light in the center of the frame (used for subjects in the center of the frame)
3. Spot = measurement of light from the small point chosen by us or from (used for macro or special situations)
In general, phones and cameras have the measurement in the "center" mode, which is a good compromise.

How do we solve the problem of dark pictures in bright light?

The best method is to compensate for exposure with AE / AF lock, ie auto exposure and auto focus are locked at a point, after which the exposure is raised.

What app can offset exposure?

Almost all good phones have today an option for compensation for exposure. If you do not have exposure compensation options on the camera application in your phone, I recommend that you use Google Camera.

Download Google Camera (apkmirror)
Careful:
You'll see more versions of Google Camera for many large versions of Android. Choose the version that's right for your phone.

  • Thank you for the tutorial and for the effort to provide us with free information even when you can, so that everyone else could be "busy" with their free time on holidays or weekends. If there is a question that has nothing to do with the topic presented: can a much higher version of android be successfully installed on an older phone? Specifically, I want the latest version on a Huawei P8 energy mini that has Android 5.1 (of course with root and all that). Thank you very much.

  • It can also be solved with the "Fill Flash" technique, for those who have a strong flash / flash.
I have a Nokia Lumia 1020 that has a xeon flash which is quite powerful against the LED flash on normal phones and that helps exactly in such things and not only.
For example, when the sun or a bright light is behind the subject, the flash illuminates the subject with more detail, without compromising the background exposure.

But for normal phones, the Google Camera app is one of the best.
    Thank you for the tutorial!

  • I do not find any .apk to go to Oneplus One! (I found some 3 for ARM, not ARM 64 but I'm not going).
